The James Bond franchise is one of the most recognizable in film history. Starting with Sean Connery in Dr. No in 1962, there have been 27 movies about the famous British spy. While Daniel Craig recently finished his portrayal of Bond with No Time to Die (2021), the series has remained consistently popular over the years. Despite different actors taking on the role, certain classic elements have always defined James Bond. However, there’s one film, released 56 years ago, that breaks with that tradition.
Released on December 19, 1969, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service stands out as a unique entry in the James Bond series. Adapted from Ian Fleming’s 1963 novel, it’s the sixth film overall and marks a significant change: it’s the first to star George Lazenby as Bond, as Sean Connery had decided to retire from the role after You Only Live Twice. But Lazenby’s casting was just the beginning of what makes this film different from all the others—many fans consider it the best one, despite its understated quality.
George Lazenby Was A Bond In Love Like We’d Never Seen Before

In On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, James Bond confronts the villain Blofeld (played by Telly Savalas), who plans to sterilize the world’s farm animals and hold the world hostage. Alongside this major plot, Bond meets Contessa Teresa “Tracy” di Vicenzo and rescues her from a suicide attempt. Tracy is the daughter of Marc-Ange Draco, a powerful mob boss connected to both Blofeld and the criminal organization SPECTRE. Draco wants Bond to marry Tracy to bring her happiness, but Bond refuses unless Draco helps him find Blofeld.
Overall, this Bond film follows a familiar formula: Bond pursues Blofeld, there’s a complex plot, and plenty of action. What makes it special, though, is the romance. Unlike other Bond films where relationships are brief, Bond and Tracy develop real feelings for each other. Their connection deepens to the point where Bond proposes during a snowstorm, and they actually get married – a rare occurrence in the Bond series. Sadly, their happiness is short-lived, as Tracy is tragically killed by Blofeld soon after their wedding. While heartbreaking, this more emotional take on Bond feels surprisingly new and, combined with a strong story, makes for a truly great movie.
Lazenby Was a One and Done Bond
Beyond its unusual storyline, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service stands out in the James Bond series because of what happened behind the scenes. When Sean Connery decided to stop playing Bond, the producers had to find a replacement. They chose George Lazenby, but he wasn’t a trained actor—he was a model with no prior film experience. While Lazenby did appear in a few other movies, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was his only time playing Bond. He told the filmmakers during production that he wouldn’t reprise the role, which ultimately led to Connery returning for the next film.
When it was first released, critics weren’t very impressed with George Lazenby’s portrayal of James Bond, and the film itself didn’t receive much praise. However, looking back, both his performance and the movie are now viewed much more favorably. Lazenby, likely because he was new to acting, brought a unique vulnerability to the role – a sense of insecurity and even cynicism we hadn’t seen in Bond before, or since, to the same degree. This works particularly well because the film feels more emotionally realistic than other Bond movies. The romance isn’t just playful; it’s a genuine and meaningful connection. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service takes itself seriously, which is rare for an action franchise, and this gives it a balance that the other films lack. It’s a truly unique Bond film – and arguably the best one yet.
