I’ve always thought Carl Hiaasen’s Skinny Dip would make a fantastic movie, and I’ve been saying that for years. So, I was thrilled to hear it’s finally being adapted for the screen, especially with Amanda Seyfried cast in the main role. Several attempts have been made before, but this one feels promising – Amanda Seyfried as Joey is perfect!
Earlier this month, Deadline announced that Amanda Seyfried will star in a new Amazon series based on Skinny Dip. The team behind Once Upon a Time, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, are writing and executive producing the show. Bill Lawrence, known for Scrubs and its upcoming revival, who previously adapted Carl Hiaasen’s Bad Monkey, is also executive producing.
I absolutely love the book Skinny Dip. It’s easily one of my all-time favorites, not just within the crime comedy genre. What really grabs me is the book’s unique tone and how quickly things go off the rails. I remember being hooked from the very beginning when I first listened to it as an audiobook.
Just before eleven o’clock on a chilly April night, Joey Perrone fell from the upper deck of the cruise ship M.V. Sun Duchess into the Atlantic Ocean. Surprisingly calm as she fell into the darkness, her first thought was, ‘I married the wrong man,’ as she hit the waves.
This novel follows a rich woman who survives a murder attempt by her husband – he throws her overboard during their anniversary cruise. Instead of going to the authorities, she decides to play dead and enlists the help of Mick Stranahan, a retired detective seeking peace on a remote island. He finds her washed ashore, barely alive, after she literally drifts to his beach clinging to a package of marijuana.

Joey is a resilient and resourceful character, and Amanda Seyfried is a perfect fit for the role. If you want to see how brilliantly she handles both serious and funny scenes, check out The Housemaid. Critics loved her performance in that film, and after watching it myself, I’m even more enthusiastic about her involvement in this new adaptation.
Carl Hiaasen’s Skinny Dip is a really enjoyable story set in Florida, full of the quirky and surprising characters he’s known for. It’s surprising it hasn’t been made into a movie or show sooner!
According to Deadline, this book has been considered for adaptation before, with previous attempts at HBO and a pilot created for the CW. Currently being produced by Warner Bros., the project is now expected to stream on Prime Video, after originally being developed for HBO Max.
I’m really looking forward to hearing about the cast, especially who’s been chosen to play Mick Stranahan, as the project develops. I might also revisit the book soon to refresh my memory.
You can pick up a copy of Skinny Dip at Amazon.
