As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of DC Universe stories, I must say that the latest development in Absolute Power has left me utterly stunned. The death of Dreamer, a character I’ve grown to love over the years, is a punch to the gut that resonates deeply. Having followed her journey from her debut on Supergirl to her comic book adventures, it’s heart-wrenching to see her make the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel the ground shaking under the DC Universe with the arrival of “Absolute Power”. The creative minds behind this series are leaving no stone unturned. Amanda Waller is leaving no punches unthrown in her relentless anti-metahuman campaign, even apparently taking the life of one of the series’ most pivotal characters in issue 2.
Before Absolute Power really picked up steam, I found myself already working under the orders of Amanda Waller. This covert operative had taken my family hostage, compelling me to join her team under the constant threat of harming them. True to form, hints were dropped throughout that one day, I would sever ties with Amanda Waller and, it seemed, sacrifice myself to give a group of metahumans a chance to escape from Waller’s clutches and Task Force VII.
In the sequel of “Absolute Power”, those metahumans yet to be captured by Waller and her team find sanctuary at Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. Although Superman assured them the fortress was invincable, one of Waller’s Amazos, aided by a Brainiac Queen-controlled Jon Kent, somehow breached its defenses. With many of her former associates suffering harm, Dreamer decides to take action and sacrifices herself in a powerful explosion, creating an opportunity for some heroes to flee the scene.
Over the past few years, this character has gained significant popularity, starting from their initial appearance on The CW’s “Supergirl” series. Subsequently, they became a part of DC Comics’ permanent cast. Notably, Nicole Maines, who portrayed Dreamer/Nia Nal in live-action, has also contributed to writing many of the character’s tales.
“This 18-year-old girl, who was previously unaware of possessing these abilities, is still finding her footing. She’s navigating the use of these powers while honoring the memory of her late mother and her legacy. However, she’s unsure of how to proceed and relies on her limited understanding and the insights from her visions to make decisions. Her aim is to do what’s right and protect as many people as possible,” Maines explained to ComicBook earlier this year.
She commented, “This moment is crucial for the character as it aligns with Dreamer’s overall objective: anticipating the future and tackling the main threat instead of being just a weekly small-time hero. If you foresee impending dangers, it’s your duty to prevent them. It’s like ‘See something, say something,’ Amanda Waller.”
The second installment of “Absolute Power” is currently up for grabs at all comic book retailers, and the narrative carries on in “Absolute Power: Task Force VII” #4 which hits stands on August 14th.
