A follow-up film, Son of the Mask, was made without Jim Carrey or the original director, Chuck Russell. Recently, while talking to ComicBookMovie, Russell discussed the possibility of another Mask sequel starring Carrey. He said people often ask him about it and he’d be happy to return if Carrey were involved, but a new film isn’t currently in development. He described the idea as ‘lovely,’ though.
Russell Crowe has said the biggest challenge while filming Gladiator was staying true to the strong moral character of Maximus. There was pressure from the studio and producers to include a sexual relationship between Maximus and the female characters, but Crowe consistently resisted. Although director Ridley Scott understood the potential appeal of such a scene, he supported Crowe’s decision, and the film ultimately didn’t include any intimate scenes between Maximus and his co-star, Connie Nielsen.

The original film Donnie Darko became a cult classic, so it’s not surprising producers wanted a sequel. Interestingly, director Richard Kelly had given up control of the story when he was just 24, as a requirement for getting the first movie made. That sequel, S. Darko, released in 2009, was created without any of Kelly’s input. It follows Donnie’s younger sister, Samantha, seven years after his death. She and her friend Corey get stuck in a small town in Utah when their car breaks down, and a nearby meteorite crash kicks off a series of strange, time-altering events. While the setup seemed to echo the original, the finished film missed the mark – it became clear that no one involved truly understood what made Donnie Darko so unique. In fact, the sequel was such a failure that Richard Kelly publicly rejected it.
Because of his involvement, he played a key role in creating the Slam Dunk anime, and his choices clearly improved the final product. The series surprisingly returned in 2022 to animate the last parts of the manga. Even though the story concluded long ago, Slam Dunk remains incredibly popular worldwide, with fans eagerly anticipating new releases. Viz Media recently announced on X (formerly Twitter) that a deluxe hardcover edition of the manga will arrive in Spring 2027. This new edition will feature exclusive color pages, redesigned covers, and a reordered volume structure based on story arcs. Details about the release date and pre-order link will be announced soon.
