Thanks To Steve Rogers’ Return, A Superhero The MCU Teased 14 Years Ago Could Finally Appear In Avengers: Doomsday

The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will bring back Steve Rogers, and this offers a chance to finally resolve a storyline teased for over 14 years. A preview for the film confirms Chris Evans will return as Captain America, even though his character’s story seemed to end in Avengers: Endgame.

Okay, so from the trailer, it looks like Steve Rogers’ story continues after he finally got his happy ending with Peggy Carter in that alternate timeline. It’s not totally clear how, but it seems he’ll be leaving that peaceful life behind – maybe just for a little while – to team up with the Avengers again. This time, they’re facing off against Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, which is… exciting, to say the least! It’ll be interesting to see what brings him back into the superhero game.

Before we see what happens next, viewers will likely get to see Steve Rogers enjoying his life with Peggy and their child in the present day. This could simply show him living as a regular husband and father in the 1950s, or it could become much more complex, given his history as a hero.

The All-Winners Squad Is A Clue About What Steve Rogers Might Have Done If He Hadn’t Been Frozen

The adventures of Steve Rogers in his altered timeline could draw inspiration from a superhero team from the late 1940s. Following World War II, the comic book company Timely Comics (later known as Marvel Comics) briefly united several of its heroes, including Captain America, into a team called the All-Winners Squad.

The All-Winners Squad – featuring Miss America, Namor the Sub-Mariner, the Whizzer, Bucky Barnes, the Human Torch, and Toro – battled enemies within the United States after World War 2. This was a shift for Captain America, who had previously been known for fighting against the Nazis.

The surprising discovery in Avengers #4 that Captain America had been frozen for a long time led to a change in earlier stories. It was later explained that the Captain America appearing with the All-Winners Squad wasn’t the original, but a temporary substitute who filled in for him.

It’s easy to see a team like the All-Winners Squad appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, too. Steve Rogers wouldn’t have been involved in the original version, but this new timeline creates a completely different situation. It’s essentially a ‘what if’ scenario where Steve could have been present to help when the U.S. – or the world – faced threats in the late 1940s and 1950s.

Everyone knows Steve is retired, but it’s hard to imagine him staying inactive if new threats appeared. He might have teamed up with today’s active superheroes to fight them, and this could be a surprising moment in Avengers: Doomsday – perhaps even shown on screen.

The MCU Already Teased The Perfect Ally For Steve Rogers In His New Timeline

If this happens, Marvel could officially bring Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, into the MCU. He’s a key character from Golden Age comics – a WWII-era superhero, a founding member of the All-Winners Squad, and even a former West Coast Avenger. As an android and one of Captain America’s earliest allies, he’s a significant figure in Marvel’s history.

As a subtle reference to the character Jim Hammond, who is connected to Captain America in the comics, the movie Captain America: The First Avenger included a hidden detail confirming his place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the Stark Expo, an exhibit featured “The Synthetic Man,” a robot that looked just like Jim Hammond.

The character’s name hints at his artificial origins, and the text above it – “Phineas Horton Presents” – confirms that the comic book creator of this character also exists within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Despite introducing the origins of Phineas Horton and Jim Hammond in Captain America: The First Avenger, the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t revisited those characters or their story. However, opportunities have been limited. That might change with Avengers: Doomsday, depending on how much the film focuses on the new timeline created for Steve Rogers.

With most other heroes unavailable at the time, it’s very possible that Steve Rogers teamed up with the original android Human Torch – either as a duo, as part of a team similar to the All-Winners Squad, or another group with the same idea – before the final showdown with Doctor Doom in Doomsday.

Marvel might even have Jim Hammond join a fight against Doctor Doom. It’s plausible that a surprising early plot point could show Doom traveling to Steve Rogers‘ time period initially.

Why A Jim Hammond Appearance Fits In With Avengers: Doomsday’s Multiverse Storyline

Bringing Jim Hammond into the story isn’t just about fulfilling a long-running fan theory or staying true to the comics; it’s deeply connected to the film’s central idea of the multiverse. The multiverse is the core of the current storyline, and will be a major focus in upcoming films like Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

If Jim Hammond showed up, the Marvel Cinematic Universe could potentially feature three different versions of the Human Torch in Avengers: Doomsday. We already know Johnny Storm will be in the movie, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Chris Evans reprise his role as the Human Torch, especially with his recent appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine and since he’s playing Steve Rogers in the film.
