Early reviews are out for the new movie starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, a remake of the 1997 film Anaconda. The story follows four friends who decide to recreate the original movie, which featured Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube. But their project takes a dangerous turn when they come face-to-face with a real anaconda while filming, turning their remake into a desperate struggle to survive. The Rotten Tomatoes score has surprised many.
Despite receiving generally negative reviews when it first came out, the movie Anaconda was a financial success, earning $136.8 million. Over time, it gained a dedicated following and led to four sequels, and now a self-aware reimagining.
While the new Anaconda film has an interesting premise, early reviews suggest it doesn’t measure up to the 1997 original. Based on 41 reviews, the reboot currently has a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is slightly lower than the original film’s 39%.
People have very different opinions about the new Anaconda movie. Some find it a funny tribute to the original from 1997, while others feel the humor doesn’t land and the plot is inconsistent. Most agree the movie has an interesting idea, but director Tom Gormican doesn’t quite bring it to life in a satisfying or clever way.
In a review for ScreenRant, Gregory Nussen rated Anaconda a 4 out of 10, describing it as both humorous and surprisingly charming, but ultimately lacking substance – like a snake. He compared it to the film Bowfinger, suggesting Anaconda tried to capture the same spirit but fell flat. Despite its flaws, the reviewer appreciated the film’s premise – a group of friends making a movie – and felt that alone could make it an enjoyable watch.
| Anaconda Movies | Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Score | Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score |
|---|---|---|
| Anaconda (1997) | 39% | 24% |
| Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004) | 26% | 27% |
| Anaconda 3: Offspring (2008) | N/A | 10% |
| Anacondas: Trail of Blood (2009) | N/A | 19% |
| Lake Placid vs. Anaconda (2015) | N/A | 14% |
| Anaconda (2025) | 37% | N/A |
Although not the worst film in the series, this installment is surprisingly disappointing, especially considering its self-aware and intentionally funny style. The original 1997 movie also received negative reviews, but its over-the-top silliness was actually a major part of its charm – it was enjoyably bad and a classic B-movie.
Joining Black and Rudd in the new Anaconda film are Thandiwe Newton and Steve Zahn. Ice Cube also returns to the series, playing a different character this time. The screenplay was written by Gormican and Kevin Etten.
Anaconda will release in theaters on December 24, 2025
