Despicable Me 4 Director Discusses the Future of the Minions Franchise

As a fan who has grown up with the Despicable Me franchise since its inception, I must say that the ending of Despicable Me 4 felt like a bittersweet farewell. The final scene, where Gru and Maxime Le Mal perform “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” with all the villains from previous films, was a heartwarming reunion that left me feeling nostalgic for the journey we’ve shared together over the past decade.

Since 2010, Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me franchise has consistently been a highly profitable venture in the entertainment industry. The Minions movies have continued to be financial successes at the box office, with this year’s Despicable Me 4 earning over $850 million worldwide. Given the substantial income generated and the scheduled release of Minions 3 in 2027, it seems likely that the successful animated franchise will continue. Consequently, the final scene of Despicable Me 4 feels somewhat like a series conclusion.

In the final act of Despicable Me 4, Gru performs in a prison talent show alongside his longtime adversary Maxime Le Mal. They duet “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” and as they sing, characters from all the previous Despicable Me and Minions films appear on screen, contributing to an impressive ensemble performance. This heartfelt scene, filled with beloved characters, could be seen as a fitting farewell for Gru and the Minions.

Referencing the on-demand debut of “Despicable Me 4”, egmr.ru had a chat with director Chris Renaud, delving into the final scene’s interpretation. Could that closing scene potentially symbolize a Minion farewell, according to him?

Renaud shared with us that, when it comes to his personal involvement in the scene, he indeed played a significant role and affirmatively stated, “Yes,” regarding this matter. To elaborate, he was referring to the fact that he recognized the success of Despicable Me 4 and Minions 3 in cinemas. However, he saw an intriguing opportunity given his 15-17 years of involvement with the franchise to unite some characters across different worlds for a special moment, almost like a fun reunion or crossover event. This concept is similar to what we’ve seen in Deadpool & Wolverine. He admitted that this idea crossed his mind while also acknowledging that it might not happen.

As a die-hard fan, I found myself drawing parallels between the enchanting “Despicable Me” series and the legendary character of Batman. Just like how different directors have brought their unique interpretations to Gotham’s caped crusader over the years, it seems as if the creators are opening up opportunities for fresh perspectives on these beloved characters within the franchise, making each installment an exciting new chapter in their journey.

The director expressed that when it comes to these characters, he finds them intriguing. Using Batman as an example, a character he deeply admires, even recent filmmakers like Matt Reeves have reimagined him in new ways. This continuous reinvention is what he finds appealing, suggesting that there’s always room for innovation. So, even though the Batman portrayed by Christopher Nolan is no longer present, another director could step up with fresh ideas. The director emphasized that this ability to be reborn is inherent in these characters because they are animated or drawn. This thought process guided them during production, and he acknowledged that while it’s not always the case in reality, it was his perspective at the time.

Despicable Me 4 is now available to purchase and rent on all major digital platforms.
