Netflix’s live-action version of the manga 10 Dance, released on December 18, 2025, quickly became a worldwide success. Originally published in 2011, the Boys’ Love manga hadn’t gained much international attention until the film came out. Directed by Keishi Otomo, who is famous for his live-action adaptations of Rurouni Kenshin and March Comes in Like a Lion, the movie became incredibly popular within a week of its Netflix debut. It topped the charts with 27.9 million views, significantly outpacing other titles like The Great Flood (3.1 million views) and Troll 2 (3.1 million views). Because the 10 Dance manga wasn’t widely known and doesn’t have an anime adaptation, there hadn’t been a large existing fanbase anticipating the live-action film.
Netflix has announced that the film 10DANCE is performing exceptionally well. From December 15th to 21st, it ranked fourth among non-English films on the platform. In less than a week after its release, 10DANCE has been viewed over 2.4 million times, and its popularity continues to grow. Netflix Japan celebrated the film’s success on X (formerly Twitter), thanking viewers and announcing a contest where 30 winners will receive a photobook and a special T-shirt.
Will There Be a Sequel to The 10DANCE Film?
The movie just came out, so there’s no official word on a sequel yet, but one could be announced later as there’s still a lot of story left to tell. Sequels are rare for live-action adaptations, as many don’t succeed, but the huge popularity of 10DANCE gives fans hope that the story will continue.
The movie captures the heart of the original manga, but it does change some character details and the speed at which the story unfolds. It centers around Shinya Sugiki and Shinya Suzuki, who are nearly identical except for their names and their very different approaches to dance. Sugiki is a celebrated traditional ballroom dancer, while Suzuki is a free-spirited Latin dance star. They clash constantly, but they’ll have to learn to work together if they want to win the highly competitive 10 Dance Competition.
This manga follows a pair competing in a demanding ballroom and Latin dance competition, where they must perform ten different styles. Sugiki, new to Latin dance, asks Suzuki for lessons, and Suzuki hopes to learn standard ballroom in return. Through their training, they discover each other’s personalities and a surprising romance develops. Seven volumes of the manga have been published and are available digitally on the Kodansha website.
