Charlize Theron Thriller ‘Apex’ Gets First Trailer from Netflix with April 2026 Release Date

She’s already shown she can handle an action role, and her new movie teams her up with Taron Egerton (known for Carry On and Kingsman). The film follows her character, a rock climber, as she fights for survival while being pursued in the wilderness. The first trailer has just been released, giving fans a sneak peek and confirming the movie will hit theaters on April 24, 2026.

The film’s tagline, “In a deadly game of cat and mouse, only one survives,” hints at its high-stakes nature. Given Charlize Theron’s history in action roles, most viewers would likely predict her character will be the last one standing. Here’s what the movie is about:

A woman, heartbroken by loss, retreats to the wilderness hoping to find peace, but instead finds herself hunted by a dangerous serial killer.

The film features Theron, Egerton, and Eric Bana. Director Baltasar Kormákur enjoyed working with a focused cast and shooting on location in Australia, telling Netflix’s TUDUM that both aspects were particularly exciting.

I’m incredibly thrilled to be working on this project. Filming in the stunning Australian outback with incredibly talented actors like Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana is a real pleasure – even though the story I’m telling puts their characters through a lot!

Charlize Theron Says Being a Women in the Action Genre is Not Easy

Charlize Theron is a proven actress, with a strong track record in action films like Æon Flux, Prometheus, Mad Max: Fury Road, and the Fast & Furious series, as well as Netflix’s The Old Guard. Despite her success in the genre, she believes it’s still challenging to get action movies with female leads made. She recently explained that:

It’s definitely more challenging. Everyone knows that action movies starring women aren’t approved as often as those with male leads. What bothers me is that male actors are often given multiple chances, even if their action films aren’t successful. But when a woman leads an action movie that doesn’t perform well, she doesn’t always get another opportunity. We were very aware of this pressure, knowing we were being closely watched. Studios are hesitant to take risks, but they frequently give the same actor multiple chances even if he’s had several unsuccessful action films.

Netflix’s upcoming film, Apex, has the potential to be a major success, similar to The Old Guard. Although it’s designed as a standalone story and isn’t expected to launch a franchise, it likely won’t be the last time Charlize Theron takes on demanding action roles. Theron embraced the challenges of filming Apex, telling PEOPLE magazine:

I was climbing constantly, practically every day. Then when I arrived in Australia, I started kayaking a lot, which was incredibly demanding physically. I was really focused on getting as strong as possible because I did all the mountain climbing in the movie – every single bit of it, and I did it barefoot, using just my bare feet.
