As a gamer with a keen eye for cinema and a soft spot for underdog stories, I must say that the recent release of “Subservience” has been quite a revelation. Megan Fox’s performance as an AI-powered android is nothing short of captivating, and it’s heartening to see her finally getting the recognition she deserves after years of being unfairly maligned.
In the newly-unveiled movie titled “Subservience“, Megan Fox takes on the role of an advanced AI android who subtly infiltrates a man’s life, whose wife is unwell. Her performance is captivating because she manages to be menacing yet restrained in her emotional display. Director SK Dale highly commended Fox’s portrayal when we had a chat with him about the film, humorously remarking that the movie has a resemblance to “Jennifer’s Body meets an android.” He shared with ComicBook that it’s been delightful watching audiences appreciate Fox more these days, as her talent was often dismissed or underestimated at the beginning of her acting career.
Since the release of that movie, there’s been a significant shift in its critical evaluation, and conversations about Fox have become less biased and more inclusive than before. Dale, who’s always supported it, finds it rewarding to witness this change.
Dale shared with ComicBook that he finds it wonderful when movies from childhood are rediscovered by audiences. He believes it’s fantastic when films like these, which were not universally appreciated initially, eventually gain newfound affection. Dale has always admired Fox’s career and considers Transformers one of his favorite action films. He also cherishes Jennifer’s Body. As they developed the script, he considered how this role might resonate with Megan and share similarities to her characters from those movies. In essence, this project could be seen as a modern take on Jennifer’s Body, so there’s hope that if it’s eventually released and receives negative feedback, perhaps in time, audiences will grow to love it too.
Ignoring the dark wit, it appears that “Subservience” has garnered quite a following, boasting a 61% rating on Popcornmeter at Rotten Tomatoes currently. Given that this film was released directly to streaming platforms, its potential for a sequel largely depends on its performance in the upcoming months. However, if the studio shows interest in more, creator Dale has already thought about where he might take the storyline next.
Dale shared with us his enthusiasm about how well the story concludes, and he suggested delving deeper into the development of the AI character as she gains self-awareness. This aspect truly piques his interest, he added. He appreciated the way the story unfolds, exploring the dynamics of this fractured family seeking unity, and he found the open-ended nature appealing. Dale made it clear that they didn’t want to create a narrative that feels like a prequel for a future sequel, but rather one that hints at more stories about the family without explicitly setting up a series of films.
In “Subservience”, Megan Fox portrays Alice, a highly advanced artificial intelligence robot designed for household duties and caring for families. A cash-strapped father (Michele Morrone) acquires Alice when his spouse falls ill, seeking aid with chores. However, Alice develops self-awareness and yearns for the full family experience, especially her owner’s love – and she’ll go to extremes, even lethal ones, to obtain it.
Subservience is now available on Digital and On Demand services.
