I had almost given up on the idea of a truly great fantasy series ever being adapted for the screen, but now a movie seems like a real possibility – a welcome change! It’s notoriously difficult to make good fantasy films, particularly when fans have strong expectations based on the books. Successful adaptations need good funding, dedicated filmmakers who respect the original story, and studios willing to invest. Unfortunately, finding all of those elements together is rare, which is why so many amazing fantasy series remain unadapted.
I used to think Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series was one of those amazing stories that would probably never become a movie or TV show. Things looked even less likely when Sanderson announced in a 2024 blog post that the planned Mistborn film project had stalled and was starting over. He’d also said he was willing to turn down good offers if they didn’t serve the story well. Considering all that, it seemed like an adaptation was a long shot, especially anytime soon. But now, it seems there might still be a chance.
After 2024’s Disappointing Update, the Mistborn Movie Is Making Progress Again

Despite a setback with the Mistborn adaptation in 2024, the project seems to be gaining momentum again. Brandon Sanderson recently shared an update on his various media projects, and surprisingly, Mistborn is now back in the early stages of development and scriptwriting. While past experience shows a deal isn’t guaranteed, Sanderson indicated that progress is being made and offered a hopeful outlook on the project’s future.
As I previously said, I had important meetings with several influential people in Hollywood back in May, and we got a few offers as a result. Things have been progressing well since then, but I can’t share any details just yet.
Hollywood seems interested in adapting Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series, and for good reason. The first three books are full of action, compelling characters, and would translate well to the big screen. A Mistborn adaptation could become a major fantasy franchise, and potentially launch a wider cinematic universe based on Sanderson’s connected Cosmere world – Mistborn is linked to The Stormlight Archive and his other books. Plus, with multiple Mistborn series available, there’s plenty of material for Hollywood to work with.
Mistborn’s Movie Update Is Great News for Fans – But There’s a Catch

As a huge Mistborn fan, I was so excited to hear about the potential movie! It sounds like we might finally see Vin’s story come to life on the big screen, even if it’s been over 20 years since the book came out. There’s just one thing – Brandon Sanderson wants to be heavily involved in making the movie, which is great, but he’s worried it could delay his progress on writing Mistborn Era 3, the next set of books he’s working on. So, while a movie is awesome, it might mean we have to wait longer for more books!
Whenever a deal is finalized for a Hollywood adaptation of my work, I’ll probably need to temporarily stop writing Ghostbloods to focus on the film and television projects. I plan to be heavily involved in adapting my books for the screen going forward.
During his 2025 update, the author stated he still expects the first Mistborn: Ghostbloods book to come out in 2028. He intends to complete all three books in the series before publishing any of them, but a potential film adaptation could delay that timeline. While a delay would be disappointing, many fans would consider it worthwhile to finally see the series adapted for the screen. A film adaptation could also pave the way for adapting other books in the Cosmere universe in the future, making the wait even more exciting.
