Avengers: Doomsday Crowned 2026’s Box Office Winner By 700 Industry Experts

Experts are predicting Avengers: Doomsday could be a major success for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine have performed well recently, the MCU has generally faced challenges in recent years. The studio is placing high hopes on this December 2026 release, which will introduce Doctor Doom as the next big villain threatening the universe. Featuring a large cast, including Robert Downey Jr. returning in a new role as Doctor Doom, Marvel is hoping this film will revitalize the franchise.

According to ComicBookMovie, a large group of over 700 industry professionals are predicting that Avengers: Doomsday will be the highest-grossing film of 2026. Considering the massive success of the previous Avengers movie, Avengers: Endgame, this isn’t surprising. In fact, 174 experts specifically believe Avengers: Doomsday will earn more at the box office than any other movie that year.

According to industry experts, eight movies are potential contenders for the top spot at the box office. The Super Mario Bros. Movie came in second with 139 votes, following Avengers: Doomsday. The original Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge success, earning $1.3 billion globally. Toy Story 5 landed in third place with 109 votes, though experts note Pixar films are critically acclaimed but don’t always dominate the box office. The previous installment, Toy Story 4, grossed $844 million worldwide.

Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, based on the classic story, came in fourth place with 104 votes. Nolan’s previous movie, Oppenheimer, was an Oscar favorite and earned nearly $976 million worldwide. The rest of the top votes went to Dune: Part Three (55 votes), The Mandalorian and Grogu (43 votes), Minions 3 and the live-action Moana (both with 41 votes).

Can the MCU Rebound With Avengers: Doomsday?

Marvel Studios has begun promoting next year’s Avengers: Doomsday film, and the initial response has been mixed. Some fans are excited to see Steve Rogers and Thor return, while others worry bringing back older heroes hinders the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s potential for new characters and storylines. Ultimately, Marvel just needs to attract audiences and demonstrate how these established heroes will pave the way for the next generation.

Strong box office numbers are crucial for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If recent declines are due to fans missing the original heroes, upcoming movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars could offer a way to revisit those characters’ stories and reassure audiences about the future of the franchise. Recently, some well-made MCU films haven’t gotten a fair chance from viewers, with many people criticizing them without even watching. For the MCU, and superhero movies as a whole, to continue succeeding, this pattern needs to change.

If predictions are correct and the new Avengers: Doomsday movie is a big hit, Marvel will have another opportunity to introduce the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and even a Young Avengers team. This success could also pave the way for Disney+ heroes like Daredevil and Jessica Jones to join the larger Marvel Universe.
