Despite initial thoughts, the Mission: Impossible franchise might not be finished. The eighth film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, recently concluded a thirty-year story, and while critics generally liked it, ticket sales weren’t as high as expected. This led many to believe the series had come to an end, but new information suggests that may not be the case.
Recent data shows the Mission: Impossible series remains incredibly popular, even after three decades. This suggests there’s potential for more films beyond the latest release, The Final Reckoning, and Paramount Pictures could definitely continue the franchise in the future.
Mission: Impossible Is Dominating Paramount+
Now that the newest Mission: Impossible film is available to stream at home, the entire franchise is performing exceptionally well on Paramount+. According to FlixPatrol, all of the Mission: Impossible movies are currently more popular, and several have made it into the top ten most-streamed movies on Paramount+. At one point, four Mission: Impossible films were simultaneously in the top ten.
This week, three Mission: Impossible movies were still popular on Paramount+’s list of most-streamed films. Surprisingly, even older films in the series were among them. The success of the newest movie, The Final Reckoning, seems to be boosting viewership for all eight Mission: Impossible films on the platform.
These films follow Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Both were costly to produce, not only because of their ambitious scope and elaborate action sequences, but also due to the significant challenges and restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. While Dead Reckoning made $571 million against a $220 million budget, barely turning a profit, The Final Reckoning earned $598 million. However, with an estimated budget of $300 to $400 million, it likely wasn’t very profitable during its time in theaters.
Despite recent box office struggles with the Mission: Impossible films, the fact that all eight movies are performing well on Paramount+ is a positive sign. The growing popularity of the series on streaming shows there’s still strong interest in Mission: Impossible, even if the latest movie didn’t draw huge crowds to theaters. There’s clearly still an audience for the franchise, and Paramount may need to rethink its approach to ensure future installments are both successful and financially viable.
Originally, The Final Reckoning was intended to be the last Mission: Impossible film, and Tom Cruise even suggested he’d stop playing Ethan Hunt after it. But the movie doesn’t really offer a definitive ending for any of the main characters. Given the franchise’s continued success, there’s a good chance we’ll see more Mission: Impossible films after all.
Will the Mission: Impossible Franchise Continue?
Despite being labeled as the last installment, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the series. The film has changed a lot since its initial announcement, and these changes actually suggest that a ninth Mission: Impossible movie could happen in the future.
Originally, Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 were planned as a single story released in two parts, called Dead Reckoning Part One and Part Two. However, after Part One was released, the plans changed. Although the two movies are still connected, they became more separate stories and lost their shared title. The Final Reckoning (originally Part Two) ended up being less of a definitive ending than planned, and Tom Cruise playfully didn’t confirm whether it would truly be the last Mission: Impossible film.
Notably, The Final Reckoning doesn’t offer a definitive conclusion for most of its main characters, except for one who dies early on. By the end of the film, all the key players, including Ethan Hunt, are still actively working, with hints that Hunt continues his role at the IMF alongside Benji, Grace, Degas, and Paris. This setup strongly suggests the possibility of another sequel, potentially featuring any of the original cast members who are interested in returning.
Even if Tom Cruise retires from the Mission: Impossible series, the franchise could continue with new stories that don’t involve his character, Ethan Hunt. The recent films, Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning, intentionally introduce compelling new characters who could take the lead in future installments. Pom Klementieff’s character, Paris, is a standout, evolving from a villain into a surprising hero, and audiences are eager to see more of Greg Tarzan Davis as Degas after The Final Reckoning.
What Would It Take for Paramount to Make More Mission: Impossible Movies?
As a huge fan of the Mission: Impossible films, I’ve been following the buzz about a potential ninth installment after The Final Reckoning. Initially, it seemed like Paramount wasn’t keen on continuing the series, but things are shifting. The biggest factor now? Whether Tom Cruise wants to come back as Ethan Hunt. Let’s be real, while the franchise could technically survive without him, he is Ethan Hunt to most of us. If they decide to move forward without Tom, the filmmakers would really need to bring their A-game to maintain the incredible quality we’ve come to expect.
Paramount is also monitoring how well the Mission: Impossible movies are doing on its streaming service. The studio has been pleased to see all eight films recently become more popular, suggesting the franchise still has potential even if recent box office numbers haven’t matched past successes. If The Final Reckoning and earlier installments continue to attract viewers, Paramount might consider making a ninth Mission: Impossible film to see if there’s enough audience interest to continue the series.

Paramount needs to look closely at why the recent Mission: Impossible movies didn’t perform as well at the box office. Both Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning were incredibly expensive to make – so much so that even huge earnings wouldn’t have fully covered the costs. They also faced tough competition from blockbuster hits like Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Lilo & Stitch. It’s not accurate to say the films failed because people weren’t interested. Had they been made with more reasonable budgets, similar to previous Mission: Impossible films, they would have been considered big successes.
To ensure success, the next Mission: Impossible film should avoid the pitfalls of earlier movies. A budget similar to previous installments – around $150 to $175 million – would be sensible for such a popular franchise. Even with that budget, a box office result like the nearly $600 million earned by The Final Reckoning would be excellent. Plus, Mission: Impossible films have shown they can earn even more when released during less crowded times. Therefore, Paramount shouldn’t base their decision to continue the series solely on box office numbers.
Even with less competition and a sensible budget, the Mission: Impossible movies remain highly profitable. Their ongoing popularity on streaming services shows there’s still a strong fanbase. Paramount would need to adapt its strategy, but Mission: Impossible is far from over, despite claims of it being a concluding chapter.
