The Traitors fans are flabbergasted by juicy twist in new teaser – but what could it mean?

The new season of The Traitors will premiere on BBC One at 8pm on New Year’s Day, giving 2026’s television schedule a strong start.

Claudia Winkleman is back to host a new group of contestants at the famous castle in the Scottish Highlands. Viewers can expect several weeks filled with betrayal, surprises, and exciting moments, hoping it matches the excitement of the recent celebrity version of the show.

It seems the season’s first big surprise might arrive soon! Fans have noticed something unusual in one of the BBC’s recently released trailers.

In the video, Claudia says, “Have yourself a merry little Christmas,” but quickly follows it up with, “I’m joking.”

Honestly, what really got to me wasn’t what Claudia said, but what happened while she was talking. As she started to announce something big, I noticed someone walking towards us, and they were wearing one of those Traitor cloaks. But this wasn’t just any cloak – it was red. Usually they’re dark green, so seeing a red one felt like a huge, ominous sign. It instantly made me feel like something really bad was about to happen.

Considering a recent black-and-white trailer with brief red highlights, it appears red will be a key color in the upcoming series.

What does this all mean? We’ll find out for sure when the first episode comes out in a few days, but fans are already discussing online what the red-cloaked figure’s role might be – could they be a traitor?

One fan on X (formerly Twitter) speculated that the game involves being a hidden traitor, with a win condition of being the only one left at the end.

One fan suggested that if the current betrayers are struggling, they might reach out to a former one – specifically, the ‘red traitor’ – for help. Another viewer believes the hidden traitor hasn’t been shown to the audience yet and is betting on that being the case.

Those are all good ideas, and it’ll be really interesting to see how this season is different from previous ones.

The Traitors is known for constantly evolving its format to keep things exciting – like when they introduced the ‘Seer’ power last year. They’re not afraid to make changes and add more drama.

Honestly, no matter what happens this season, I have a feeling it’s going to be another wild ride full of drama! I’m already so excited, I can barely wait!

Season 4 of The Traitors starts on January 1st, 2026, at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. You can watch the first three seasons now on BBC iPlayer.
