Stranger Things Creators Officially Confirm the Fate of a Nancy and Jonathan

The show isn’t primarily focused on romantic relationships, but it did feature several important couples. The creators have now confirmed that one of those key couples has broken up.

In the first part of Stranger Things Season 5, the relationship between Nancy and Jonathan was clearly struggling. The second part of the season confirmed what many viewers suspected: the couple, who had been together since Season 2, had officially broken up, and the Duffer Brothers, the show’s creators, have said the split is permanent.

While stuck in Hawkins Lab within the Upside Down, Jonathan and Nancy have a heart-to-heart and finally share their true feelings. He gives her a ring he’d been holding onto, but instead of a proposal, he jokingly calls it an ‘un-proposal’.

The show’s creators have confirmed the couple has split up, stating simply, “They are broken up.”

The creators said this storyline had been in the works for a while. Matt Duffer explained that they felt Nancy needed to become independent and discover who she is as an individual. He pointed out that it’s rare for people to stay with their high school sweetheart, suggesting this was a natural progression for her character.

Natalia Dyer Previously Broke Silence on Nancy’s Love Triangle

Season 4 suggested Nancy might end things with Jonathan and reconnect with her former boyfriend, Steve. While they did split from Jonathan, it became clear Nancy is focused on figuring out what she wants. Despite a conversation with Steve, a romantic reunion between them doesn’t seem probable.

The actress described the dynamic between Nancy and Jonathan as incredibly tense. After being separated for a long period last season, their reunion is filled with pressure and stress. This situation, she explained, forces them to re-evaluate their priorities and focus on what truly matters, as well as where they should invest their energy and what is worth their effort.

When asked if she was concerned about how things would turn out for the characters, Dyer explained that after ten years, it’s impossible not to become deeply attached to them and their journey. She hopes for an ending that feels genuine and fitting—not necessarily perfect, but one that feels earned and makes sense given everything they’ve been through. Ultimately, she emphasized that the conclusion needs to feel right for everyone involved.
