The fourth season of Stranger Things revealed that Henry Creel, also known as Vecna, was actually responsible for all the strange and terrifying events since the very beginning. Everything, from Will Byers’ disappearance to the rise of the Mind Flayer, was part of Vecna’s long-term plan. Now that Volume 2 of Season 5 is out, we understand what Vecna is trying to achieve and how the heroes plan to stop him. While the final episode is sure to have surprises, the recent episodes have given us enough clues to make a pretty good prediction about Vecna’s ultimate fate.
Warning: Spoilers below for Stranger Things 5, Volume 2
Season 5 of Stranger Things explains that the Upside Down isn’t a separate world, but rather a kind of shortcut through space and time – like a wormhole. Dustin Henderson figures this out while looking into the old research of Dr. Brenner, the man who originally broke through to the Upside Down. This means the Upside Down isn’t a parallel universe, but a connection between two very different places in our own reality.
The Upside Down is held open by a special substance called exotic matter, which keeps the wormhole connecting our world to the dangerous realm where Vecna lives from collapsing. This matter is the biggest weakness in the enemy’s defenses. If the heroes of Hawkins can destroy it, they can close the wormhole, trapping anyone still in the Upside Down when it disappears.
Stranger Things Is Setting the Stage for a Heroic Sacrifice in Season 5

The final episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 see the Hawkins group launching a complex attack on Vecna. Eleven and Kali directly confront him with their psychic powers, while Will Byers uses his abilities to invade Vecna’s mind, forcing him to relive his own painful past. This distraction aims to weaken Vecna, allowing Steve, Nancy, and the others to enter the Upside Down and rescue the kidnapped children. Ultimately, after defeating Vecna, they detonate a bomb near the strange material in the lab, destroying the connection between worlds and permanently closing the Upside Down.
Given the scale of the Stranger Things finale, expect some unexpected turns. It’s likely the heroes’ original plan won’t fully succeed. For example, they might not be able to defeat the threat completely in the Abyss, pushing the final showdown with Vecna back into the Upside Down. If that happens, destroying the exotic matter will probably be their last resort to finally defeat him.
Okay, so it’s pretty clear someone’s going to have to stay behind and make the ultimate sacrifice to close this wormhole and take Vecna down with it. While Eleven and Kali have hinted at self-sacrifice, my money’s on Jim Hopper. Seriously, the guy’s been trying to be a hero and give up his life for his family for seasons now. It just fits. I think the explosion that seals the wormhole will be the final blow, a last-second win achieved through a really tragic, heroic act. It’s heartbreaking, but I’m almost certain that’s where the story’s heading.
You can now watch the final part of Stranger Things Season 5 on Netflix. The last episode will be released on January 31st.
