The Walking Dead: The Real Reason Daryl Dixon Isn't in the Comics

As a die-hard fan who has followed the journey of “The Walking Dead” since its inception, it’s both fascinating and a bit disheartening to delve into the complexities surrounding the character Daryl Dixon in the comic series. The man, the myth, the legend… yet, he never officially graced the pages of the comic book.

In the comic book series of “The Walking Dead”, it’s highly improbable that Daryl will make an appearance because, as Robert Kirkman stated in a 2012 issue, he cannot use Daryl Dixon in the comics due to licensing issues. Interestingly, in the same comic, Kirkman introduced a character named Dwight who shares similarities with Daryl, such as using a crossbow and becoming Rick Grimes’ right-hand man. However, there’s no official relation between the two characters.

Daryl isn’t featured in any comics-based video games, but he’s often the main character in AMC’s games, such as Survival Instinct. Kirkman explains this, pointing out that the 2013 game, which had Reedus and Rooker providing voices for the Dixon brothers, was a prequel to the series’ first season, where Daryl made his debut in an episode penned by Frank Darabont, Jack LoGiudice, and Charles H. Eglee.

Although character Daryl never made an appearance during the 193-issue run of “The Walking Dead” comic book, renowned series artist Charlie Adlard has depicted Daryl in his unique style. Additionally, cover artist David Finch, exclusively for ComicBook, illustrated a comic book rendition of Reedus’ character Daryl, which was showcased on the art book “The Art of The Walking Dead Universe,” published by Skybound.

2018 saw Kirkman stating that due to legal complications concerning “intellectual property rights” and “portrayal rights,” the AMC-owned character couldn’t feature in the comics. In a 2023 issue of TWD Deluxe, he wrote, “I wouldn’t have made that move because it would’ve felt disrespectful to incorporate others’ work into the comic. I never aimed for the show to alter the comic, as the comic was what sparked the series in the first place, and I was concerned it could lead to a vicious cycle.

The Walking Dead Deluxe #98 is on sale now from Image Comics.
