On December 28th, the Epic Games Store is giving away a free retro-style RPG from 2024. While it received a respectable 76 on Metacritic, players on Steam overwhelmingly enjoy the game, giving it a 93
Players on PC can now get Skald: Against the Black Priory for free through the Epic Games Store. Anyone can create a free Epic Games Store account to download it. While the game usually costs $14.99, this is the first time it’s been offered at no cost, though the discount isn’t huge.
A Dark, Retro Fantasy RPG With Party-Based Gameplay
If you haven’t heard of Skald: Against the Black Priory by High North Studios AS and Raw Fury, it’s a classic-style RPG where you control a party of characters. The game is set in a dark and brutal fantasy world, filled with tragic heroes, dangerous combat, and elements of Lovecraftian horror.
The game, as you can see in the trailer, is an 8-bit RPG reminiscent of classic games from the past. Like those older RPGs, you’ll build a team – in this case, a group of flawed heroes – and guide them on a journey from the corrupted lands of Idra to the Black Priory and even further.
If you’re trying out this classic RPG now that it’s free, you can expect to spend around 15 to 20 hours finishing it. Players who like to complete everything will likely need 25 to 30 hours – that’s a lot of gameplay for a game that usually costs just $14.99.
A Great RPG Story
One popular review calls the game incredible, praising its story and the constant sense of dread it creates, culminating in a surprising ending. The reviewer is a big fan and eagerly anticipates a sequel.
The user mentioned a possible sequel, but the developer hasn’t announced one. Since this was the developer’s first game, it’s hard to say if or when a sequel might be released, even if it’s being planned.
One popular review simply says, “Great story and really captivating writing!” Players are enjoying the strategic and immersive combat, and praise the game’s detailed world and rich backstory. Many say it brings back fond memories of classic 90s and early 2000s gaming, making it a worthwhile purchase.
