Daniel Diemer’s portrayal of Tyson is a standout addition to Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He plays a cyclops who is fiercely protective of Percy, but also very kind, and is essentially presented as Percy’s adopted brother. While Percy and Tyson connect easily, Tyson doesn’t quite get along with Annabeth.
Annabeth is clearly unsure about Tyson, and the show hasn’t yet explained why – though those familiar with the book know the reason. While we haven’t seen much of Tyson’s feelings for Annabeth, the beginning of Season 2, Episode 4 hints that he might also be wary of her, based on how she interacts with Percy.
TopMob recently interviewed Daniel Diemer, who plays Tyson in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He discussed how Tyson understands Annabeth’s feelings for him and shared his character’s feelings in return.
Diemer pointed out that while Tyson is very emotionally aware and perceptive, he can’t read minds. He understands feelings well, but he doesn’t know what Annabeth thinks of him unless she tells him.
Even though Annabeth often seems distant, Tyson really wants to be friends with anyone Percy cares about. He also genuinely admires Annabeth and looks up to her.
You can find the rest of Daniel Diemer’s interview with Russ Milheim from TopMob, including hints about what happens after the Season 2, Episode 4 finale, below. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is currently available to stream on Disney+.
Here’s What Tyson Thinks of Annabeth

“He Wants to Be Able to Be Such Good Friends With People That Percy Loves.”
- TopMob: “At the very start of Episode 4, Tyson gets upset with how Annabeth is talking to Percy. And Annabeth isn’t really a fan of Tyson either at this point. Do you think he really understands why that is?”
Daniel Diemer doesn’t think Tyson is psychic, but believes he’s very emotionally aware and good at understanding how others feel. However, Diemer feels that understanding won’t matter until Annabeth is willing to share her own feelings with him.
It seems like he’s feeling a bit hurt, confused, and maybe even frustrated, because he wants to be close friends with the people Percy cares about. He definitely admires Annabeth and looks up to her. However, he’s completely unaware of the specifics of what’s going on, but he’s very curious to find out.
Tyson’s Guilt After the Ship’s Explosion In Episode 4

“He Has Such a Protective Nature…”
- TopMob: “Tyson is great at inventing and fixing things, but he couldn’t, obviously, keep the ship from failing, and everything kind of blows up. Teasing what’s ahead, do you think he’ll feel any guilt about not being able to stop that, even if there was nothing he could do about it?”
Daniel Diemer is really talented, but what stands out even more is how protective he is. He’s always striving to be his best self and to be there for everyone else. He genuinely feels responsible for keeping the whole group safe.
Right from the start, you see Tyson immediately prioritizing others – like when he rescues Percy from the taxi and shields him from the fireball. He consistently puts everyone else first. Because of this, I definitely think he’s carrying a lot of guilt, and hopefully Percy can help him work through it.
Building Tyson and Choosing Another Father

Daniel Diemer Wants To Explore “Why He Becomes Such a Protector…”
- TopMob: “When you were building what you felt Tyson was with your performance, what is something that you think you added to the character that maybe wasn’t originally on the page, but then you just kind of felt or that you just bought naturally [to your performance]?”
Daniel Diemer didn’t consciously try to change anything from the source material. He felt the show’s dialogue, while sometimes shorter or less frequent than in the books, captured the essence of Tyson’s character. He focused on delivering that same heart and soul through the lines he was given.
I believe the writers deserve the credit for developing the character so well. I hope I was able to portray those qualities authentically and showcase his many sides.
The film really emphasizes the emotional weight of his backstory – things like his difficult childhood, being alone, and his reflections on life – in a way that, while present in the books, isn’t as prominent. It highlights the sadness and pain of those experiences more directly.
I think this section really developed his character, showing how his experiences affect him and ultimately lead to him becoming the protector we see throughout the rest of the story.
- TopMob: “If Tyson wasn’t the son of Poseidon, what other god’s banner do you think he might fit under?”
Honestly, I’d say Hephaestus. It’s probably the most obvious choice – he’s just incredibly creative. And if you look at the source material, without giving anything away, there’s a son of Hephaestus he has a really good relationship with.
