PlayStation Plus is undergoing a significant change starting in January 2026. For players who haven’t upgraded to the PS5 and are still using a PS4 or PS4 Pro, the service will be less valuable. While most gamers in major markets like the US and Europe have moved on to the PS5, a notable number still use older consoles. In many smaller markets, however, the PS4 remains the dominant console, largely due to cost and accessibility – the PS5 is still too expensive for many players in those regions.
Many people are still using PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles, and Sony is making some changes for PlayStation Plus subscribers who own these older systems. Starting in 2026, PS4 games will be featured less often in the PlayStation Plus game lineup. While PS4 games won’t disappear completely, they’re no longer guaranteed to be included as free monthly games – the focus will now be on providing games for the PS5.
Potential Downgrade for Those on PS5 as Well
It’s unclear whether this change will mean fewer games each month, or if Sony will simply add more PS5 games to make up for the loss of PS4 titles. If they do that, the subscription could become more appealing, since PS5 games are generally more expensive. However, the selection of PS5 games isn’t as strong as the PS4 selection yet, so while the service might offer more for your money, the overall quality of games could go down.
This is particularly true when considering games made by the console manufacturer itself. Compared to the PlayStation 4, the number and quality of first-party games on the PlayStation 5 have been disappointing. Because of this, if Sony does include one of their own games in the PlayStation Plus subscription service – which isn’t common – it’s more likely to be a weaker title. A recent example is December’s offering, LEGO Horizon Adventures, which many found to be uninspiring.
