A recent report suggests the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox could be delayed. While Sony and Microsoft haven’t officially announced these consoles, they’ve both indicated new hardware is in development. Many expect the new consoles to launch around 2027 or 2028, following the typical release schedule of previous generations. However, manufacturing issues may now push those release dates back further, disappointing gamers hoping for an earlier launch.
Rising RAM prices may push back the release of the next PlayStation (PS6) and Xbox, according to Insider Gaming. Demand from AI companies building large data centers has caused a significant increase in the cost and scarcity of RAM. Because of this, Sony and Microsoft are reportedly considering delaying their new consoles, hoping RAM prices will decrease. This could mean fans won’t see the PS6 or the next Xbox until 2029 or even later, as exact launch dates are currently unknown.
PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Could Get More Expensive

Besides postponing the release of new PlayStation and Xbox consoles, Sony and Microsoft may also need to increase the prices of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Prices for both consoles have already been rising throughout 2025, with Xbox experiencing more significant increases than PlayStation. While both companies likely have a large supply of consoles available, future production will cost more. This means consumers could end up paying higher prices to cover those increased manufacturing costs.
Recent reports suggest Xbox could face another price increase due to unexpected shortages of RAM. Unlike Xbox, Sony appears to have a large supply of RAM, protecting the PS5 from price hikes for now. However, if RAM availability doesn’t improve in the coming months, both Xbox and PlayStation may eventually need to raise prices.
If you’re thinking about buying a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S, now might be a good time. The next generation of consoles will likely be very expensive, and current PS5 and Xbox prices could still go up.
