As a longtime fan of arcade classics and B-movie horror action, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming “The House of the Dead” movie! With Paul W.S. Anderson at the helm, known for his work on the Resident Evil series, this promises to be a thrilling ride that combines the adrenaline-pumping gameplay of the original with an “extreme haunted house” twist.
A fresh adaptation of “The House of the Dead” is being developed, with Paul W.S. Anderson (known for Resident Evil) taking on directorial duties. This video game, which originated from Sega and is a popular on-rails zombie shooter, has been a staple in many arcades since its debut in 1996 and has also made its way onto consoles. Numerous games have sprung from the initial release of “The House of the Dead.” At this point, Jeremy Bolt is attached as an executive producer, but neither a cast nor a release date has been confirmed yet.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve learned from Deadline about the upcoming “The House of the Dead” movie. It looks like Uwe Boll and Andre Owens (the team behind some fantastic films) will be collaborating with Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Dan Jevons from Story Kitchen on this project. Timothy I. Stevenson is set to serve as executive producer alongside Sega’s Toru Nakahara, who has a rich history producing various Sonic the Hedgehog adaptations like the 2020 “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie, its sequels, and the “Knuckles” TV show. I can hardly wait to see what they’ll bring to the table with this exciting new project!
The House of the Dead series has a backstory that explains why you’re battling hordes of zombies, but many players likely view it as a fast-paced arcade shooter game. For the upcoming House of the Dead movie, they’ll need to develop a storyline to connect everything. However, it seems like Anderson is aiming to leverage the action from the games by creating an “extreme haunted house” style of horror film.
In simpler terms, Anderson told Deadline that the new House of the Dead movie won’t assume viewers are already familiar with its background. Instead, it will provide a clear starting point where everyone can join in, immediately diving into the action, and gradually unveil the characters and plot during its 90-minute runtime, as they struggle to escape the scariest haunted house ever experienced.
Bolt discussed the design of the creatures from the initial House of the Dead game series, providing hints about how they might appear in the film. He pointed out that the original game’s director, Takashi Oda, did not typically label these monstrosities as “zombies,” but rather referred to them as “creatures.” These creatures are known for their speed and intelligence, with certain types being far more hideous than the conventional zombies often depicted in games.
He stated that “Resident Evil” was strongly influenced by the Romero Zombie films. In contrast, “House of the Dead” is a different concept altogether. The creatures in Resident Evil are more like genetically modified zombies, with enormous, steroid-enhanced bodies and chainsaws attached to their limbs.
In terms of Resident Evil, it’s the series for which director Anderson is recognized. He helmed many of the live-action Resident Evil films featuring Milla Jovovich, and he’s also known for the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, the recently released Monster Hunter film, and Event Horizon. Some of these movies have garnered more positive reception than others, so it remains to be seen where The House of the Dead will land in that mix.
The House of the Dead movie should be in production by mid-to-late-2025, according to the report.
