Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Leaves Netflix Jan 22, 2026

The Ghostbusters franchise has delighted audiences for over forty years. The newest movie, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, came out in 2024 and continues the story from 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

If you enjoy the Ghostbusters movies, you’ll have until January 22, 2026, to watch Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on Netflix. Starring Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Logan Kim, and the original Ghostbusters cast – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson – the film will no longer be available on the streaming service after that date.

The original Ghostbusters film, directed by Ivan Reitman and written by Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd, launched a successful franchise that continued with the 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters 2. The latest installment, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, released in 2024 and grossed $201.9 million worldwide, exceeding its approximately $100 million budget.

The film earned a little less at the box office than Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which made $204.4 million worldwide. Critics didn’t like Frozen Empire, giving it a low 42

In Frozen Empire, the Spengler and original Ghostbuster families join forces in New York City to save the world from a powerful, ancient spirit that could trigger another ice age.

What’s Next for the Ghostbusters?

Ernie Hudson, known for playing Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters movies, recently shared his hopes for his character’s future. In an interview with ScreenRant, Hudson expressed his desire to see Winston take on a leadership role and head the Ghostbusters team in a future film.

Hudson believes the studio is wisely prioritizing family-friendly content. However, he’d also enjoy seeing the character Winston lead his own team and explore new storylines. He doesn’t want Winston to be relegated to an office role, and hopes to see him actively involved in the action, similar to his portrayal in the original movies.

Dan Aykroyd has expressed interest in returning as Ray Stantz in future installments of the franchise, potentially as early as November 2025. During a recent interview on the Talking Strange podcast, he jokingly suggested they could always use ‘pink slime,’ hinting at his willingness to reprise the role.

We’re planning another Ghostbusters movie, but we’re still deciding on the best approach. Given the current state of the world, it feels important to address how people are behaving – and not in a good way – within the story.”

I just learned that if I want to watch Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on Netflix, I need to do it before January 22nd, 2026! After that, it’ll be gone from the streaming service, so I’m making plans to watch it soon.
