Fox’s new crime series, Memory of a Killer, looks like a great choice for anyone who enjoyed Michael C. Hall’s role in Dexter. The Dexter universe is thriving – Dexter: Resurrection was a big success, and even the limited run of Dexter: Original Sin drew a lot of viewers. It’s a fantastic time to be a fan of the show.
With the second season of Dexter: New Blood still a ways off, fans are likely searching for their next captivating crime drama. While few shows match the intensity of Dexter, Fox’s new thriller, Memory of a Killer, might just fit the bill. Here’s an overview of the series and why Dexter fans should check it out.
What Is Memory Of A Killer About?
In Memory of a Killer, Patrick Dempsey plays Angelo Ledda, a professional hitman struggling with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease – a condition that causes memory loss. As his memory fades, Angelo races against time to conceal his dangerous profession from his family and to eliminate his enemies while he still can, all in an effort to protect those he loves.
The first trailer for the Fox series Memory of a Killer suggests a captivating crime thriller. The show centers on Angelo, a hitman desperately trying to hide his profession, but adds a layer of tension as he also struggles with his own failing memory. To make things even more complicated, he can’t tell his boss and friend about his condition, fearing dangerous consequences if he does.
How Memory Of A Killer Will Be Different From Dexter
As a big fan of crime dramas, I see a lot of potential overlap between Memory of a Killer and Dexter. Both shows center around a killer, but they approach it differently. Dexter’s protagonist actually enjoyed taking lives, while the killer in Memory of a Killer seems to view it more as a job. What really sets Memory of a Killer apart, though, is the added layer of the main character having Alzheimer’s – he’s not even sure if he’s told the wrong people about his past!
While Memory of a Killer might appeal to fans of Dexter, it differs in a key way: the focus is flipped. Unlike Dexter, where the main character actively hunted down other serial killers, Memory of a Killer‘s protagonist, Angelo, appears to be the one being pursued. Angelo’s connections to organized crime also set him apart from Dexter, who operated as a lone vigilante. Despite these differences, the new show seems designed to attract viewers who enjoyed Dexter.
Patrick Dempsey Was Recently Part Of The Dexter Franchise
Fans of Dexter might also enjoy Memory of a Killer because Patrick Dempsey appears in both series. He recently joined the Dexter universe in the 2024 prequel, Dexter: Original Sin, playing Captain Aaron Spencer. Interestingly, the character he plays in Memory of a Killer, Angelo, shares a lot of similarities with Spencer, making it a great show for Dexter fans.
At the end of Dexter: Original Sin season one, Spencer was unmasked as the kidnapper and serial killer Dexter had been tracking. Both Spencer and Angelo share a common trait: they are secretive killers who hide their true selves from their families and those they care about. Therefore, Memory of a Killer essentially offers Patrick Dempsey the opportunity to expand on the role he first played in Dexter: Original Sin, allowing him to explore the character in greater detail.
