Excitement for Avengers: Doomsday is building rapidly! With the movie less than a year away, fans are closely analyzing every trailer and online rumor. This week, speculation has grown that the film will feature even more Marvel stars than originally announced, but we won’t know for sure for another year. Now, a rumor that fans have discussed for over twenty years has resurfaced.
The recent Marvel livestream, where the cast for Avengers: Doomsday was revealed, included many familiar faces like Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, and Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. While some appearances were expected, fans were surprised to see Channing Tatum returning as Gambit, along with classic X-Men characters played by Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier) and James Marsden (Cyclops). Now, a new rumor suggests we might see two popular heroes from 2000s Marvel films: Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine – though it seems they could be rivals in the movie.
Avengers: Doomsday May Pit Spider-Man vs Wolverine in a Fight

According to John Rocha on The Hot Mic podcast, a Marvel insider has confirmed that both Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will appear in Avengers: Doomsday and will even share a fight scene. While the reason for this fight isn’t known yet, the movie is expected to involve teams of heroes from different universes colliding, so it’s likely heroes will end up battling each other to protect their own realities. This makes the upcoming fight between Spider-Man and Wolverine feel fitting for the film’s overall story.
Hugh Jackman first played Wolverine in the 2000 film X-Men, and Tobey Maguire debuted as Spider-Man in 2002. This means fans have enjoyed these iconic versions of the characters for over twenty years and have often imagined a fight between them. While Wolverine typically wins in the comics, movie battles like the one in Captain America: Civil War often have less clear-cut results.
Just a short time ago, seeing Spider-Man and Wolverine fighting alongside each other in a movie would have been impossible. Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man was made by Sony, and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine appeared in the X-Men films from 20th Century Fox. But now, thanks to a deal between Marvel Studios and Sony for the Spider-Man movies, and Disney’s purchase of Fox, this once-unimaginable scene is a real possibility. While Marvel hasn’t confirmed if Jackman and Maguire will be in Avengers: Doomsday, rumors of a fight between them are circulating. These rumors depend on them even being in the movie, but many fans expect to see them both appear, having already made cameos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine. For now, though, we can only guess and enjoy the speculation.
