Avengers: Doomsday’s X-Men Debut Undoes Fox’s Insult, 25 Years Later

There’s a lot of buzz around Avengers: Doomsday, which many believe will finally deliver the X-Men story fans have been waiting for over two decades. While the X-Men films came out well before the current superhero craze – which really took off with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008 – they were pioneers. It’s easy to forget now, but back then, superhero movies were considered risky, and Marvel had been working for years to convince studios to take a chance on their characters. This is why the X-Men films feel so unique compared to today’s superhero movies.

The reluctance to embrace traditional superhero costumes was clear in the 2000 X-Men film; Fox seemed hesitant to fully commit to the look. The movie even addressed this directly with a scene where Wolverine complained about his leather suit, prompting Cyclops to jokingly ask if he’d prefer yellow spandex – a moment that came to represent Fox’s cautious approach to superhero films. Now, with Avengers: Doomsday, that hesitation is finally being overcome.

Avengers: Doomsday is Giving Us Comic-Book-Accurate Superhero Costumes At Last

As a huge movie fan, I was so excited to see the leaked trailer for Avengers: Doomsday! And honestly, I almost fell out of my chair when I saw James Marsden back as Cyclops. Let’s be real, Fox didn’t do that character justice, especially with how they… well, got rid of him in X-Men: The Last Stand to push the Wolverine story. So, seeing Cyclops getting some spotlight in the new trailer is amazing. And the best part? He’s finally wearing the classic blue and yellow X-Men uniform from the ‘90s comics! It’s a great look for him.

Designed by Jim Lee, this costume featured a blue suit with yellow accents – straps, a belt, and briefs. Many fans consider it one of Cyclops’ best looks, and it became widely known through the classic X-Men: The Animated Series and recently reappeared in X-Men ’97. While Marvel previously showcased a comic-accurate Wolverine costume for Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine, this Cyclops suit was a surprise reveal in Doomsday. Marvel is revitalizing the X-Men with Doomsday, and many believe the MCU is currently handling the team more effectively than Fox did.

Cyclops’ Costume Has Major Implications for the MCU

While Avengers: Doomsday is a big event, the classic Cyclops costume hints at something more. Doomsday feels like a way to honor the past 25+ years of Marvel films, which is why we’re seeing familiar X-Men actors return. Once that’s done, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will essentially start over, fully integrating mutants – meaning the X-Men will finally be a major part of a connected universe. It’s likely Cyclops will be included in this new direction.

If Marvel is incorporating Jim Lee’s classic Cyclops costume into the Doomsday project, it’s likely the main MCU version of the character will have a distinct appearance – probably to maximize merchandise potential. This is good news, suggesting Marvel’s X-Men won’t simply rely on familiar designs, but will offer a new take on the team. It’ll be interesting to see who Marvel casts as Cyclops and what costume they choose for the actor.
