Spartacus Creator Reveals Which Character He Wants To Bring Back After Ashur’s 100% RT Sequel Show

Now that a deceased character has returned for a potential new Spartacus series, creator Steven DeKnight has expressed interest in bringing back another familiar face – possibly even resurrecting them.

Speaking with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant, the creator of Spartacus: House of Ashur shared that he’s interested in revisiting other characters from the original series and expanding the show’s universe with more stories.

DeKnight expressed a desire to revisit the time period before the character Ashur’s death, specifically to further explore the story of Gannicus. He mentioned that Dustin Clare, the actor who played Gannicus, is popular with fans and he’d enjoy collaborating with him again.

The show was so focused on giving its main character, Ashur, a chance to redeem himself through a different timeline that there wasn’t space for any other unexpected characters to return, according to DeKnight. He explained, “I really wanted to explore the idea of a flawed character striving to become a better person, and Ashur’s journey was my main focus.”

Gannicus, played by Clare, first appeared in the second season of Spartacus and also had a role in the prequel series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. In a 2020 article, ScreenRant agreed with showrunner Steven DeKnight that the character deserved more screen time and a more developed storyline.

The article noted that Gannicus was a skilled fighter and provided much-needed humor, and it wished he had appeared in more than just half of the show’s episodes.

Exploring Gannicus’s character further could help him improve his relationships. ScreenRant identified him and Saxa as one of the most problematic couples in Spartacus, citing the complications that arose when Sibyl showed interest in Gannicus.

According to the article, this situation made Saxa feel insecure and possessive. She repeatedly confronted Sibyl, warning her to stay away from Gannicus, but this actually pushed Gannicus away. He eventually left Saxa for Sibyl, and they remained together until Gannicus died.

Man, I was floored when they killed off Saxa in the third season of Spartacus. It was rough, but honestly, even more shocking was what happened right after – they crucified Spartacus himself in the very last scene of the finale. It was a brutal way to end things!

Despite the absence of the popular character Gannicus, Spartacus: House of Ashur has been well-received by critics. It initially earned a perfect 100

According to the show’s creator, DeKnight, he hopes season one of House of Ashur isn’t the last, and that the Spartacus sequel series will continue.

According to creator Marco Ramirez DeKnight, the show was initially planned for around five seasons, but the final number—ranging from four to seven—would depend on its popularity, as he told ScreenRant at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

New episodes of Spartacus: House of Ashur are released every week on Starz, and the next one will be available on Friday, January 2nd.
