JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a truly original and important series in the world of anime and manga. Created by Hirohiko Araki in 1987, it’s a long, multi-generational story that follows the Joestar family as they fight against supernatural enemies in different eras and places. The series is known for constantly changing and surprising viewers, from the gothic horror of its early parts like Phantom Blood, to the intense mafia conflicts in Golden Wind, and even the bizarre setting of the Steel Ball Run arc.

I’m completely hooked on JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure because each new generation of the Joestar family brings something totally unique to the table! They’re all so different, with their own problems and ways of tackling them, which keeps things exciting while still feeling like the same awesome series. And honestly, it’s just a blast – the over-the-top style, the iconic poses everyone loves to meme, and the wonderfully weird characters make it unlike anything else. Okay, sometimes the story gets a little slow or a part takes a bit to get going (Part 1, I’m looking at you!), but trust me, sticking with it is always worth it. The payoff is incredible!

7. Jonathan Joestar

Jonathan Joestar, the first JoJo, isn’t the most flamboyant or complicated hero, but he’s essential to the entire story of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. He’s a genuinely good and admirable character thanks to his strong moral compass and sense of honor, though he can seem a little simple when compared to the more eccentric characters that come later. Jonathan’s biggest asset is his incredible willpower and his ability to stay true to his values, even when his adopted brother, Dio, becomes a monstrous vampire and betrays him.

Jonathan Joestar’s story in Phantom Blood is a classic tragedy, much like a Shakespearean play, and establishes the overall feel of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series. His final, selfless act to defeat Dio ensures he’s remembered as a genuine hero. Though his descendants are often more colorful and unusual, Jonathan’s strong will and good heart are fundamental to the Joestar family’s history and enduring strength.

6. Josuke Higashikata 

Josuke Higashikata stands out as a refreshing character in Diamond is Unbreakable. He’s different from other JoJo protagonists like the serious Jotaro or impulsive Joseph; Josuke feels more grounded and easy to connect with. People are immediately drawn to his fun-loving nature and loyalty to his friends, and his quick temper—particularly when someone makes fun of his hair—provides plenty of comedic moments. His Stand, Crazy Diamond, is also special, offering a creative twist to fights with its power to repair and restore things.

Josuke is a complex character – a caring friend and family member, but also a clever and resourceful fighter. His battles, especially against opponents like Yoshikage Kira, are known for being creative and unique. Though he isn’t as flashy as some other Joestars like Jotaro or Joseph, Josuke’s combination of humor, compassion, and tactical thinking makes him a remarkably balanced and effective hero.

5. Johnny Joestar

Johnny Joestar is one of the most complicated and morally gray characters in the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series. In Steel Ball Run, he starts as a resentful, selfish ex-horse racer who can’t walk. His cross-country race to collect the corpse parts isn’t just about gaining power, but also about finding a way to make amends for his past. As Johnny grows as a person, so does his Stand, Tusk, eventually becoming one of the strongest Stands in the entire series with its final form, Tusk Act 4.

Johnny Joestar stands out because he’s deeply flawed. While other Joestars like Jonathan and Jotaro are more straightforward heroes, Johnny’s path is complicated and realistic, marked by selfishness, errors in judgment, and genuine personal growth. He isn’t always easy to root for, but his relentless fight against both physical and emotional hardship is incredibly moving. Ultimately, by the end of Steel Ball Run, Johnny becomes one of the most complex and relatable characters in the JoJo series.

4. Jolyne Cujoh

Jolyne Cujoh is a groundbreaking character as the first female protagonist in the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series. Her story in Stone Ocean—transforming from a troubled teen into a brave hero—is one of the most captivating in the entire series. Jolyne’s Stand, Stone Free, gives her incredible power and flexibility, letting her unravel into threads to battle enemies and escape danger. Like her father, Jotaro, Jolyne is fiercely determined to prove her innocence and protect those she cares about, but she brings her own distinct strength and intelligence to the fight.

I watched Jolyne’s story unfold, and it was truly about overcoming impossible challenges. She was stuck in Green Dolphin Street Prison, constantly targeted by Pucci, a follower of Dio, and her struggle to survive was incredibly intense and moving. The way she sacrificed herself at the end of Stone Ocean was one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever seen in the series.

3. Joseph Joestar 

Joseph Joestar from Battle Tendency is arguably the most entertaining Joestar. As the main character of Part 2, he’s a clever, showy, and confidently boastful hero who wins fights by being unpredictable and outsmarting his opponents. He’s different from his predecessor, Jonathan, preferring to fight using tricks and psychological tactics rather than honor. His famous moments, like predicting what his enemies will say, are now classic parts of the series’ humor and appeal. Despite his goofy behavior, Joseph is deeply loyal and protective of his loved ones, and he’s willing to do anything for them. His final battle against Kars, a supremely powerful being, is one of the most exciting moments in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

2. Jotaro Kujo

Jotaro Kujo is the classic hero of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series. Best known from Stardust Crusaders, he’s famous for being cool, calm, and seemingly unbothered by everything. This attitude is perfectly matched by his powerful Stand, Star Platinum, which is known for its precision and relentless attacks. Jotaro’s fights against Dio’s followers, and especially his final battle with Dio himself, are some of the most exciting and unforgettable scenes in the series, making him a truly legendary character. He’s so popular and important that he continues to appear and influence the story even when other characters take the lead.

1. Giorno Giovanna

Giorno Giovanna is widely considered one of the best characters in Golden Wind, earning his place as a legend. Born as the son of Dio Brando—and a descendant of Jonathan Joestar—Giorno has a truly unique background and personality. His Stand, Gold Experience (which later evolves into Gold Experience Requiem), is incredibly powerful, giving him the ability to control life and even alter reality during his final fight with Diavolo. Though some find him reserved, his unwavering determination is what makes him such a captivating character.
