Although Doctor Who is currently facing some uncertainty, former actress Mandip Gill is confident about the show’s future.
2025 was a difficult year for the BBC’s classic sci-fi series. Disney stopped co-producing the show, Ncuti Gatwa left his role as the Doctor, and the season 15 finale, ‘The Reality War,’ received a somewhat negative response from viewers.
Even with current challenges, the show is planned to return with a Christmas special in 2026. This episode will need to wrap up a storyline hinting that Billie Piper might become the next Doctor, though this hasn’t been confirmed yet.
“It always returns,” she explained. “Considering how long the show has lasted, and the fact that Doctor Who fans readily embrace new ideas, it’s able to reinvent itself every few years.”

Gill believes the show will definitely return and continue to grow in popularity and excitement. However, she also feels there’s a limited number of actors who could convincingly play the Doctor.
It definitely takes a special kind of person to pull this off. I’m confident they’ll succeed, and it will be fascinating for those of us on the inside to see who it is. I’m sure they’re going to have a wonderful experience.
Responding to talk about the show ending, Gill believes it will return eventually, saying it has the potential to continue for a long time.
Gill recently reprised her role in a new Doctor Who audio drama, appearing alongside Jodie Whittaker. This story expands on the evolving connection between Yaz and the Thirteenth Doctor.
The actor’s next role is in the new sitcom Can You Keep a Secret?, which stars Dawn French (known from The Trouble with Maggie Cole), Mark Heap (Friday Night Dinner), and Craig Roberts (Still Up). The show follows a family trying to successfully commit insurance fraud.
