As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that DC’s latest offering, Creature Commandos, has certainly piqued my interest. The first episode introduced us to the Sons of Themyscira, a group that seems to be a clever nod to both fanaticism and toxic masculinity.
In the initial installment of DC’s “Creature Commandos,” we see Circe (portrayed by Anya Chalotra) collaborating with a band of men who refer to themselves as the Sons of Themyscira. Though this animated series playfully satirizes problematic fan culture through its portrayal of the group, it’s important to note that the Sons of Themyscira have a comic book equivalent. However, this comic book version has no connection to their “Creature Commandos” counterpart.
Who Are the Sons of Themyscira in DC Comics?
During the “New 52” era of DC Comics in the 2010s, the descendants of Themyscira became one of the most contentious elements in Wonder Woman lore. In a significant revamping of Amazonian society, this initiative disclosed that the people of Themyscira sustained their culture by engaging in a questionable practice: seizing ships at sea and interacting briefly with male sailors. After these interactions, the men were eliminated, and their bodies discarded into the ocean. This ritual maintained both their bloodline and their seclusion.
In the following nine months, baby girls born among the Amazons were welcomed as new inhabitants of Themyscira. Yet, when these unions resulted in sons, the Amazons perceived them as failures and rejected them from their paradise-like island. However, Hephaestus, a god who had also endured maternal rejection by Hera, stepped in to halt this cycle of abandonment. He proposed a trade: he would provide the Amazons with weapons and armor in return for their unwanted sons. This arrangement not only offered these rejected children a safe haven but also instilled purpose in their lives. Under Hephaestus’s tutelage, these abandoned sons of the Amazons earned the title “Sons of Themyscira.
It’s not hard to understand why Wonder Woman fans might have felt displeased by this peculiar creative decision. You see, the idea of the Sons of Themyscira contradicts the Amazons’ principles of love and knowledge, instead revealing a more ominous aspect of their supposedly advanced society. It’s worth noting that this concept was abandoned during DC’s “Rebirth” project, returning Wonder Woman’s mythology to its original traditional foundation. However, it’s intriguing that James Gunn has chosen to acknowledge this controversial phase in DC Comics history – though he merely retains the name and transforms everything connected with the Sons of Themyscira, so perhaps it would be wiser to start laying a new path instead.
Creature Commandos’ Sons of Themyscira Parodies Toxic Masculinity
In the comic series “Creature Commandos“, a faction called the Sons of Themyscira comprises men who resent the fact that an island like Themyscira exists, where only women inhabit. They view Themyscira as an earthly paradise, characterized by harmony between its inhabitants and nature, which they believe serves as an ideal blueprint for society. These Sons argue that if such a utopian place exists, it should be accessible to all, including men. Accompanied by Circe, the sorceress, they cause chaos in Pokolistan, with the antagonist hinting at their potential invasion of Themyscira.
The sons of Themyscira seem oblivious to the irony in their circumstances. Despite frequently advocating for gender equality and accusing the Amazons of exclusion, they find themselves marching behind a strong female leader into a conflict they barely comprehend – serving as mere pawns on the battlefield. It’s worth noting that Themyscira’s supposed greatness stems from its long-standing seclusion from the male-dominated society for centuries.
When William Moulton Marston dreamed up Wonder Woman, he intentionally set Paradise Island as a harmonious society that was forged by women who had shaken off human oppression. His intention was to showcase the potential of women to excel physically and mentally in an environment devoid of men. Since her debut, Wonder Woman has been a beacon of feminism, defying patriarchal norms.
Introducing the Sons of Themyscira in “The New 52” comic series was highly controversial due to its impact on Wonder Woman’s long-standing mythology. Instead of reinforcing her message of female empowerment, it introduced a plot device that seemed more like a cheap ploy.
Nevertheless, a few DC fans still get angry about some of the company’s retcons. Gunn is aware of this vocal minority, so he decided to blow the dust off the Sons of Themyscira concept and reimagine it as a satiric version of the men who criticize Wonder Woman for being “anti-men,” completely missing the point of Wonder Woman’s tradition. It was never about excluding other people, just about creating safe spaces for women to exist beyond the rule of men. It will be interesting to see if/how DC Studios expands these themes in the upcoming Paradise Lost TV show.
New episodes of Creature Commandos hit MAX every Thursday until January 9, 2025.
