Fans have longed for a more authentic portrayal of Superman on the big screen, and when they finally received it this week, they surprisingly found themselves comparing it to its previous version. As per FlixPatrol, Man of Steel was one of the most-watched movies on HBO and HBO Max in the past week, which is fitting given the circumstances. James Gunn’s latest Superman film debuted on Friday, launching the DC Universe franchise and replacing the existing DCEU continuity. Even those who weren’t fond of Man of Steel might have wanted to make comparisons between the two. In any case, the surge in streaming indicates that fans are immersing themselves deeply in this content.
Lately, Superman has experienced several revamps, causing die-hard supporters distress and confusing casual viewers. When Man of Steel debuted in 2013, it was promoted as DC Comics’ counterpart to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It initiated the “DC Extended Universe,” which promptly led to collaborative movies like Batman v. Superman and Justice League. Unfortunately, this franchise didn’t endure, and DC didn’t wait long before launching another reboot.
In my opinion, among the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films, Man of Steel shares the closest resemblance to the classic Superman. Both are the pioneering entries in their respective series and revolve around the same titular character. When it comes to the DCEU, many viewers find that Man of Steel stands out as a film that can be enjoyed independently. However, its somber atmosphere and intense portrayal of Superman (Henry Cavill) by some were met with criticism, particularly later on as fans felt it established the overall mood for the entire franchise.
It’s important to mention that while the movie didn’t dominate HBO’s streaming charts this week, it was not the most-watched title. Instead, new releases like “Sinners,” “A Minecraft Movie,” and last year’s drama “The Outrun” took the top spots. “Wicked” followed closely, with “The Thicket” from 2024 and “The Northman” from 2022 coming in next. Even though “Man of Steel” came in lower on the list, its appearance is still significant given the timing.
Enthusiasts of the latest Superman film have a wealth of older titles to reminisce about at home. Apart from past Superman movies, there’s the DCU’s inaugural series, ‘Creature Commandos’, currently streaming on HBO Max. Additionally, you might want to revisit Peacemaker Season 1 before Season 2 debuts in the DCU on August 21st. And if everything else is closed, Superman can still be seen on the big screen right now.
