The show Landman has introduced a new character to replace Tommy Norris (played by Billy Bob Thornton) in Season 2, Episode 8, titled “Handsome Touched Me.” The second season of the oil industry drama has been performing well, with the premiere attracting 9.2 million viewers within its first two days on Paramount+.
Several things are making the second season of Landman particularly promising. The addition of Sam Elliott as T.L., the father of Tommy Norris, introduces exciting new storylines. We’ll also see more of Cami Miller (Demi Moore) and Gallino (Andy Garcia), as M-Tex tackles a challenging offshore drilling project at the last minute.
Cooper Norris Is Replacing Tommy As M-Tex Oil’s New Landman
In Season 2, Episode 5 of Landman, Tommy brings his son, Cooper (Jacob Lofland), on board as the new landman for M-Tex Oil. This was previously Thornton’s job, where he handled crises in the Permian Basin. Now, Tommy is taking charge of the company following the departure of its president.
In Season 2 of Landman, Tommy realizes he’s spread himself too thin trying to manage the company and handle land acquisition, causing him to overlook important details in both roles. He addresses this over lunch at the Patch Cafe by offering his son his old job, and Norris Jr. happily accepts.
I was so impressed with Cooper’s initial vision – he was really poised to launch his own company. It’s a shame things didn’t go as planned, and he ended up having to step back from leading the drilling project. Even though Norris Jr. did incredibly well, successfully finding oil in all six of his wells, some serious financial missteps ultimately led to M-Tex Oil taking over the whole operation. It’s frustrating to see potential stifled like that.
Cooper Becomes A Project Manager In Landman Season 2 Episode 8
In Season 2, Episode 8 of Landman, Cooper regains some control when Tommy Norris puts his son in charge of the WolfCamp drilling project. Tommy and Cooper then meet with the engineering and rig crews at the man camp – including Boss (Mustafa Speaks), King (Dougie Hall), and Ben (Caleb Martin) – to explain the details of the new project.
So, right before leaving, Tommy dropped one more thing. He said his son would be running the project, and asked if anyone had issues with that. Honestly, I could see why Boss immediately spoke up! He politely pointed out that Cooper had basically been his assistant just a few months ago, and Norris Jr. had come up fast – like, straight from the bottom to a leadership role. It definitely felt like Tommy was playing favorites, you know?
Tommy quickly reassured the oil workers, proudly explaining that his son had successfully drilled six oil wells, finding oil in every single one. This demonstrated Cooper’s expertise and proved he was ready for a promotion. After hearing this, the other workers readily accepted Cooper’s new position.
With the oil workers now following Cooper’s lead, Norris Jr.’s part in this situation is changing. While Cooper isn’t officially a landman yet, taking charge of the WolfCamp drilling project is a crucial first move. As project manager, he’ll essentially act as a landman for the wells he oversees, giving him the experience needed to fully become one.
Landman Season 3 Can Continue Cooper’s Evolution
Throughout the series Landman, Cooper undergoes a remarkable transformation. He begins as a new employee and quickly rises through the ranks, eventually starting his own oil drilling business. He ultimately finds himself in a leadership position, overseeing people who were once his managers, demonstrating impressive growth and development.
Cooper’s growth as a leader is well-deserved. He initially studied geology in college, but left to start working in the oil fields. He felt it was important to gain practical, hands-on experience before leading a company himself. So far, his instincts have proven to be correct.
Even though Cooper hasn’t started his own company because of funding issues and having to deal with debts owed to M-Tex, he’s become a key leader – somewhere between Tommy and Dale – by the end of Season 2, Episode 8 of Landman. Now that Paramount+ has renewed the show, they can continue to develop Cooper’s character and further evolve the series.
