Many fans have mixed feelings about Thor: Love and Thunder, but a recent development in Avengers: Doomsday may have altered its impact. While the film touched on serious themes like grief, trauma, and cancer, it was criticized for prioritizing humor, leaving many viewers feeling the story didn’t get the weight it deserved. Despite the focus on jokes and Thor’s comedic moments, the core narrative was strong, culminating in a powerful scene of Thor and his adopted daughter fighting side-by-side.
Originally, Thor had Mjolnir and Valkyrie had Stormbreaker. But the latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday doesn’t feature Mjolnir, and shows Thor with Stormbreaker instead. This could be a letdown for fans. However, things aren’t always what they appear to be.
Did Thor Lose Mjolnir Before Avengers: Doomsday?

The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday follows an earlier one that hinted at Captain America having a child with Peggy Carter. This new trailer focuses on Thor, who is seeking guidance from his father, Odin, concerning his adopted daughter, Love. Both trailers share a common thread: the original Avengers now have children, and this could be a key element in the villain Doctor Doom’s plans for Avengers: Doomsday.
The preview closes with Thor on his knees, pleading for assistance with his daughter while looking at Stormbreaker. As fans recall from Thor: Love and Thunder, Jane Foster was diagnosed with cancer and hoped Mjolnir could provide a cure. While the hammer did bond with her and offer healing, it interfered with her chemotherapy. It only kept her cancer at bay when she transformed into Thor; once she became Jane again, the cancer returned, and it was even more severe.
In the end, she gave her life to save Thor. This act of sacrifice led Gorr, the God Butcher, to use his final wish to bring his daughter back to life, costing him his own. As he died, he asked Thor to care for his daughter, a young girl named Love, and Thor happily became her father and guardian. Although Thor briefly lost Mjolnir after her death, he regained it, and Love eventually wielded the powerful Stormbreaker axe. Despite recent events in Avengers: Doomsday suggesting Thor has lost Mjolnir again, this could be a deliberate deception.
Alternatively, Thor might be focused on blessing Stormbreaker, Love’s weapon, while leaving Mjolnir at home. This fits with his desire to protect Love, and praying over her weapon could be a way of asking Odin to watch over her. Ultimately, though, Thor still needs Mjolnir – it’s the weapon most closely tied to his identity, even if Stormbreaker is more impressive to watch.
