Marvel is generating excitement for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film, but one actor has already confirmed they’ll be back for Avengers: Secret Wars too. This return to the Avengers movies comes after a challenging few years following Avengers: Endgame. The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t as consistently successful with critics or audiences as it once was, and some weaknesses are starting to become apparent. However, it hasn’t been all negative; several compelling new characters like Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), and Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) have been introduced since Endgame.
A common criticism of Phases 4 through 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that compelling characters are introduced but then don’t reappear in later films. Upcoming movies Doomsday and Secret Wars aim to address this. For example, Shang-Chi hasn’t been seen since his 2021 film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Simu Liu, who plays Shang-Chi, had already been confirmed to be in Avengers: Doomsday, and he recently told PEOPLE that he will also return for Secret Wars.
I’m excited about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, which is scheduled for release next year. I was fortunate enough to work on it, and I’ll also be involved in the next film, Secret Wars.
I made some truly wonderful friendships while working on Doomsday. I especially want to mention Channing Tatum – he’s one of my favorite people, and I had an amazing time with him both during and outside of filming. He’s a really admirable person.
Shang-Chi Should Be A Massive Part Of The MCU’s Future

A major challenge for the upcoming Doomsday movie will be giving enough attention to its large cast of characters, but the Russo Brothers have successfully handled similar situations before. Shang-Chi is expected to join the Avengers team – distinct from the group previously known as the Thunderbolts and now called the New Avengers – alongside heroes like Sam Wilson/Captain America and Thor. Actor Simu Liu’s comments suggest Shang-Chi will share a good amount of screen time with the X-Men, indicating he’ll likely have a substantial role in the film.
Shang-Chi has quickly become a standout character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his first movie, Legend of the Ten Rings, is among the strongest films released since Endgame. Simu Liu’s performance makes Shang-Chi a likable and exciting addition to the Avengers, particularly with his unique fighting skills, and fans are eager to see him in future films like Doomsday and Secret Wars. Beyond those team-up movies, however, a Shang-Chi 2 is essential, and hopefully a third film could follow. He has the potential to become one of the MCU’s leading characters, starring in both his own adventures and alongside other heroes.
Liu shared some encouraging news about the Shang-Chi sequel, though he didn’t offer many details, simply stating, “It is happening.” Given that Secret Wars is planned for late 2027 and will wrap up Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a Shang-Chi 2 film likely wouldn’t arrive until 2028 at the earliest. With Marvel expected to refresh its storylines after Secret Wars and give more attention to the X-Men, releasing Shang-Chi 2 early in Phase 7 would be a strategic decision.
Okay, so mark your calendars, fellow Marvel fans! We’re finally getting Avengers: Doomsday on December 18th, 2026, and then, just a little over a year later, Avengers: Secret Wars hits theaters on December 17th, 2027. I’m already counting down the days!
