James Gunn, the director of Superman, is recognized for his witty and bawdy style in filmmaking – just consider the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and his version of DC’s The Suicide Squad. While these teams are well-known as rule-breakers in their respective universes, Superman stands out as one of DC’s top superheroes and also the most wholesome. That’s why it didn’t come as a shock to learn that another NSFW joke was removed from the new movie. Even though the joke wasn’t spoken by “Big Blue” himself, given Superman’s PG-13 rating and wide family audience, it’s understandable why it was edited out.
As reported by user @ViewerAnon, a humorous moment occurred when Superman (David Corenswet) fought off a giant creature (kaiju), which Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) had released on Metropolis to divert Superman while he infiltrated the Fortress of Solitude. This action-packed scene also marked the official debut of the Justice League: Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabella Merced), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi). These corporate-backed heroes assisted Superman in defeating the creature, although he refused to kill it to subdue it.
After the heated battle, here’s an uncensored conversation I overheard between Guy and Superman – a dialogue that James Gunn decided to leave on the cutting room floor.
Originally, after the kaiju was defeated and Superman expressed his wish to have taken it to a zoo instead, this was the conversation:
PERSON: Stop acting like a coward!
SUPERMAN: Watch your language, there are children present!
PERSON: That’s why I said don’t!!

In a humorous exchange, it’s clear why Gunn opted to eliminate the dialogue; it was due to concerns about children, both on set and in the audience. Fillion and Corenswet skillfully portray their characters, one as a smooth-talking ladies’ man and the other as an honest defender of justice, through various interactions within the movie. Gunn’s quip at Superman, while being idolized by kids, goes somewhat beyond the boundaries of the “charming rogue.” The scene works wonderfully without the explicit language, thanks to the actors’ impressive performances. Corenswet effectively conveys Superman’s innocence, while Fillion’s reaction and expressions perfectly illustrate his feelings towards Superman’s high ideals.
In a different part of the movie, Gunn isn’t hesitant to include jokes with a suggestive tone. For instance, when the character shouts back at Lois after her criticism of his haircut at the Hall of Justice saying “384 women would say you’re wrong!”, it cleverly straddles the line of acceptability while alluding to the hero’s number of victories. However, this joke might go unnoticed by younger audiences watching Superman because it doesn’t contain any overtly explicit language.
In the end, it appears that Gunn’s decision was justified. Regardless of the joke, Superman retains Gunn’s offbeat wit, and the characters he created are just as lively and incisive as the cityscape of Metropolis that he constructed for them.
Superman is now playing in theaters.
