Another renowned manga by the esteemed and impactful Rumiko Takahashi, known for “Ranma 1/2” and numerous other works, will shortly have an enthralling anime adaptation, and it’s being handled by the team behind her most successful project. Over time, this mangaka has seen many outstanding adaptations, and soon, one of her lesser-known series will appear on TV and streaming services, giving her followers a chance to discover another great series that hasn’t received enough attention.
According to official updates from both Rumiko Takahashi’s account (previously Twitter) and the MAO anime project, it has been confirmed that the creator’s series will be turned into an anime set for release in spring 2026. This upcoming production will be handled by Studio Sunrise, known for their work on Inuyasha, and key personnel from the original anime will be returning to contribute to this new venture. The manga is a dark fantasy creation of Takahashi’s, making it her sixth anime adaptation following her 35-year milestone in the manga industry where she has consistently produced hit series.
Rumiko Takahashi’s Latest Anime Adaptation Will Hit Next Year
In contemporary times, Nanoka Kiba, a high school student, narrowly cheated death under puzzling circumstances eight years back. Her life takes another bizarre twist when she stumbles upon a mysterious portal and is whisked away to the Taisho Era. Here, she meets Mao, an elusive exorcist on a quest to eradicate a lethal being called a byōki. As they venture through this epoch filled with supernatural perils together, Nanoka slowly uncovers secrets that could link her past to Mao’s mission in intriguing and profoundly interconnected ways, paving the way for an enigmatic adventure.
Teruo Sato is set to helm the anime production at Studio Sunrise (known for ‘Cowboy Bebop’ and ‘Code Geass’), having previously directed another manga by Takahashi, ‘Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon’. Yuko Kakihara, who recently revived ‘Urusei Yatsura’, will oversee the series composition. Meanwhile, Yoshihito Hishinuma takes on dual roles as both the chief animation director and character designer. Hiroshi Katō and Izumi Hoki are appointed as art directors, with Hiromi Kikuta handling sound direction. Notably, team members who have previously worked on other manga by Rumiko Takahashi have been enlisted for this project.
The second season of the rebooted Ranma 1/2 will debut in October 2025, followed closely by the new anime series Mao. Initiated in 2019, the manga remains visually captivating and reflects Rumiko Takahashi’s distinctive style. With a talented team working on it, there’s no question that this adaptation will be outstanding and further enhance the esteemed creator’s anime portfolio.
