A fresh attraction at Disneyland often generates excitement, typically when it’s a grand, must-ride experience – perhaps a new roller coaster or an extraordinary dark ride. Given that this year marks Disneyland’s 70th anniversary, one might anticipate a significant addition to the park. However, contrary to expectations, the latest feature is surprisingly compact, yet incredibly meaningful.
The upcoming biographical exhibition “Walt Disney: A Magical Life,” set to open on July 17, marking the 70th anniversary of Disneyland’s inauguration, will not only showcase a short film about the life of Disneyland’s founder, but also unveil an audio-animatronic figure representing Walt Disney himself.
Walt Disney Has Come Home To Disneyland
It’s unique that Disneyland is the Disney Park where Walt Disney himself once walked within. Given this, it seems appropriate for a production like “Walt Disney: A Magical Life” to premiere at this very place. However, after witnessing the entire show, I won’t be surprised if it eventually gets shown in other Disney parks worldwide.
The presentation kicks off featuring a fresh take on the movie “One Man’s Dream,” available at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This updated film is narrated by Disney CEO Bob Iger. His voice, combined with Walt Disney’s own words, guides us through his life journey, starting from his birth in 1901 and moving forward to the initial stages of Walt Disney World’s development.
Subsequently, the curtains sweep back completely, lifting a screen. We step into what appears to be Walt Disney’s office, with the man himself standing casually by his desk. Through his own words, he addresses us. The monologue is a compilation of various interviews and television appearances that Walt Disney gave throughout his life, but it has been skillfully edited so that it sounds as though all the pieces were spoken at once by the same man in the same moment.

Walt Disney Is A Huge Leap Forward In Audio-Animatronics
More recently, significant advancements have been made in the field of audio-animatronics, yet nothing quite compares to the pioneering work of Walt Disney. Apart from the latest U.S. President, many new audio-animatronics in attractions are modeled after animated characters or fictional entities, offering a wide berth for creative transformations. However, for Walt Disney, there was minimal room for mistakes due to his unique and groundbreaking approach.
During the act, Walt initially rests against his desk but later stands up. Notably, at the closing of the performance, he resumes leaning back on the desk – a rather unusual behavior for such an individual.
However, it’s not just what he does, but how he does it that leaves a lasting impression. Anyone who has watched clips from the classic Disneyland TV series will notice the distinctive way Walt Disney moves his hands and the sparkle in his eye. The detail with which these mannerisms have been replicated gives the entire performance an authentic feel.
Working closely with the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, Walt Disney Imagineering meticulously gathered accurate details about Walt Disney himself. The replica rings on display are identical to the ones he actually wore. These rings are attached to bronze casts of Walt’s genuine hands. Even the fabric used for the suit is authentic.

It’s Not A Perfect Walt Replica, But That Might Be A Good Thing
Although the Disney animatronic captures many aspects correctly, it’s not flawless. From my point of view, the facial mold resembles Walt Disney enough to be identified as him, but it doesn’t seem completely accurate. However, I can’t rule out the possibility that this imperfection might have been intentional.
My primary apprehension upon entering “Walt Disney: A Magical Life” was fear of being plunged into the unsettling realm known as the uncanny valley due to the audio-animatronics. I worried that Walt might appear incredibly lifelike, which could potentially be unsettling, much like how highly realistic computer animation can be both awe-inspiring and slightly unnerving at the same time.
It could be beneficial that Walt Disney isn’t an exact likeness of himself, as a closer resemblance might make him appear too realistic. This realism could potentially turn the audio-animatronic character into something more unsettling rather than comforting.
I viewed the “A Magical Life” presentation on two occasions. Initially, the slightly off-putting appearance of the character’s face stood out more to me. However, upon rewatching, it caused me less concern. Admittedly, no production can be flawless, and if the facial mold is the most prominent compromise, the show appears to be on a strong footing.
As a devoted admirer of Walt Disney, I held great anticipation for the show. However, living a flawless life like him wasn’t among my expectations. Instead, the animatronic was supposed to capture his spirit, and in that respect, it certainly delivered.

Walt Disney Is The Perfect Addition To Disneyland
Regardless of any imperfections in the audio-animatronic version of Walt Disney, the show “Walt Disney: A Magical Life” remains a fantastic addition to Disneyland Park. As you traverse Main Street U.S.A., visitors will find themselves closer to the spirit of Walt Disney than ever before. On one flank of the square stands the firehouse, a place where Walt Disney often slept when he was present within the park. Across from it lies the Opera House, where the show “Walt Disney: A Magical Life” is now playing for guests to enjoy.
If the circumstances align perfectly, I can hardly envision a more delightful morning kick-off at Disneyland than encountering Walt Disney in person. However, it’s important to note that when the show premieres, they will employ a virtual queue system instead.
Today, Walt stands side by side with Abraham Lincoln, a role model from over six decades ago. Intrigued by Lincoln’s legacy, Walt spearheaded a project to bring the 16th President to life through audio animatronics. Being an ardent admirer of Lincoln, he aimed to ensure that future generations could connect with him as a real person, appreciate his existence, and comprehend the significance of his role in history.
Stepping into the cinematic realm, I’d say: “Walt Disney might not have shaped the course of global politics, but he indubitably left an enormous imprint on worldwide culture. In my humble opinion, Walt Disney stands shoulder to shoulder with giants like Abraham Lincoln. The film, ‘Walt Disney: A Magical Life,’ I believe, has the potential to resonate with today’s audience much as the original Disneyland show did for generations past – it invites us to see Walt Disney not just as a character in our favorite stories, but as a flesh-and-blood man.
