Following the Indiana Jones series finale and the portrayal of Bob Dylan on screen, director James Mangold is now shifting his focus towards a distant galaxy. He’ll be delving into this galaxy’s past by millions of years. Mangold has recently been appointed to direct a new Star Wars film set in an era called the Dawn of the Jedi. This movie will delve into the beginnings of the Force and the individuals who possess it.
It might appear unusual to envision a fresh Star Wars movie in this specific location, given the current emphasis of the series on the years related to the New Republic. However, this shift seems to be the primary factor attracting Mangold to the story. As he shared with MovieWeb, the thrill of working within a largely unexplored Star Wars playground, untouched by most of the franchise’s existing lore, is what excites him.
In Mangold’s own words, what stands out the most for him are two key factors: firstly, the ability to create something fresh and innovative, as he and Beau [Willimon] are currently working on a script for Star Wars. The outcome remains uncertain. Secondly, he emphasizes the importance of finding an original way to express this new idea on paper.
He goes on to explain that one reason for setting the Star Wars movie in a time period 25,000 years before any previously known movies is because this era and its possibilities have always intrigued him, even as a teenager. At this point, he feels less compelled by the extensive lore surrounding Star Wars, finding it nearly immovable and difficult to please everyone with such constraints.
In the course of discussing Mangold’s diverse career spanning multiple genres, it was mentioned that he expressed an interest in delving into Star Wars. Essentially, Mangold finds joy in pushing his boundaries by working on varied projects, which he likens to moving from one playground to another with each film he creates.
Throughout my professional journey, I’ve always taken delight in switching up my tasks. I don’t believe it’s about transforming myself, but rather about diving headfirst into projects that others might find unusual or that I myself hadn’t anticipated. It’s more about keeping myself surprised and pushed out of my comfort zone. To some extent, it’s also about seizing opportunities. Since I’ve been fortunate enough to do so, I can explore various genres because people are willing to fund them.
Currently, there’s no fixed release date for “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi,” but it is actively being worked on at Lucasfilm. It remains uncertain whether this project will be director Ridley Scott Mangold’s next venture or if he will initially shift to DC Studios for his Swamp Thing adaptation first.
