Why the Animals Lost the Ability to Speak in Wicked

Many audience members suspect the Animals are being magically silenced, especially considering Madame Morrible’s motives, and that’s a reasonable assumption. However, the reason for their silence is more complex than a simple spell. This intentional vagueness encourages viewers to consider the significance of their loss. This aspect of Wicked is designed to communicate a powerful message about the experiences of those who are marginalized and oppressed. After struggling through the 1970s, DC bounced back strongly in the early ’80s, but 1986 proved to be a truly groundbreaking year for the publisher. As a huge fan of The Office, I always loved Paul Lieberstein as Kevin. He recently shared a story with Entertainment Weekly about how much of the show was actually improvised, with bits and jokes coming directly from the actors. Apparently, there was this one hilarious line Kevin delivered that didn’t make the original cut, and Paul was bummed about it. But get this – it’s now been added back into the episodes on Peacock, and he feels totally vindicated! It’s great to see those little moments that fans loved finally make it into the show, even years later.
