At The Game Awards 2025, Wildlight Entertainment – a new studio formed by developers who previously worked on games like Titanfall and Apex Legends at Respawn Entertainment – revealed its upcoming free-to-play PvP shooter, Highguard. Here’s a complete overview, including the release date, gameplay details, and the latest news.
We’ll also cover which platforms Highguard will be available on, and if you’ll be able to play with friends on different platforms (crossplay).
Unfortunately, initial online reactions to the game are reminiscent of the disappointing launch of Concord, though we’re hoping for a better outcome. Every game deserves an audience, but its success depends on that audience being substantial enough.
But without further ado, read on for all things Highguard.
When is the Highguard release date?

The Highguard release date is 26th January 2026.
Currently, the release date hasn’t been announced. It’s unclear whether the launch will happen everywhere at once, or if it will be rolled out gradually to avoid overloading the servers.
Once we know more, we will update you as soon as we can!

Is Highguard free-to-play?

Yes, Highguard is free-to-play.
While the price of entry will be free, there will no doubt be in-game transactions, such as skins.
We don’t have details yet about season passes or battle passes, but based on popular games like Fortnite, we expect they’ll likely be included.
Which consoles and platforms can play Highguard?

Highguard is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.
Although Nintendo hasn’t announced a Switch 2 version yet, the game appears capable of running on the minimum PC specifications, suggesting it could potentially be made for the next-generation console.
If players enjoy Highguard, Wildlight Entertainment might consider releasing it on other platforms.
Certainly, expanding the playerbase will help it survive in the long run.
Is Highguard crossplay?

Yes, Highguard supports full cross-play and cross-progression across all launch platforms.
Players on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox will all be able to play together, and your progress will transfer seamlessly if you switch between platforms.
For free-to-play games with multiple players, allowing people to play together regardless of their device is essential. A larger player base significantly increases the game’s chances of success.
Highguard gameplay details

The Highguard Steam page offers a brief description of the game from developers Wildlight Entertainment: it’s a player-versus-player raid shooter where you play as Wardens – magical gunslingers battling for dominance over a legendary continent.
The game features players fighting against other teams to control a powerful item called the Shieldbreaker. Once they have it, they’ll need to invade and demolish the opposing team’s base to claim territory – it’s a fresh take on the shooter genre.
That’s all there is to say, except for what we can gather from the trailer, which you can watch below!

Yes, there is a Highguard trailer!
The game’s trailer debuted at The Game Awards 2025, but it hasn’t been well-received by everyone. After a lot of free-to-play games released recently, many viewers expressed disappointment in the comments.
According to Paul Tassi at Forbes, the trailers for Highguard have received very few likes compared to dislikes – roughly ten dislikes for every like.
Based on the gameplay shown, Highguard looks like a solid PvP shooter. It features engaging mechanics, diverse classes and weapons, and a distinctive world.
The reaction is most likely down to how saturated the market has become. What do you think?
