Tina Knowles knows that sometimes, sweet dreams can become beautiful nightmares.
This was particularly true for her daughter, Beyoncé, who performed while pregnant with Blue Ivy Carter at ITV’s 2011 concert special, A Night with Beyoncé. Tina Lawson actually remembered the event vividly, sharing a throwback video of the performance.
I just saw this post and it reminded me of a tough time,” the 72-year-old wrote on Instagram on January 6th. “This was one of our most challenging shows ever. Beyoncé was about two months pregnant with Blue and felt incredibly sick to her stomach.
“In between songs, she would run back and throw up and come out and do the next song,” she continued. “This is when I knew without a doubt how strong and resilient of a performer she was.”
Tina observed that Beyoncé, who now has a 14-year-old daughter, Blue, and 8-year-old twins, Rumi and Sir, with her husband Jay-Z, hadn’t yet revealed she was pregnant at the time.
Despite being very ill, the older woman said, she still managed to perform brilliantly in the show.
In addition to dealing with health issues, Tina Knowles – and mother to Solange Knowles – once shared how people speculated that Beyoncé wasn’t actually pregnant. This was due to the way her dress looked during a television appearance, appearing to bunch up in a way that led some to believe she was pretending.
Tina shared with People magazine in April that the hardest part of the situation was feeling unable to speak up. Her daughter worried that addressing it would only draw more attention, but the issue lingered for a long time. Tina said it was deeply hurtful to see people behave so badly.
As someone who really values family, and especially cherishes the innocence of babies, it’s incredibly hurtful to hear people spread awful rumors and accuse my entire family of fabricating something so personal. It’s deeply upsetting to think they believe we’d all be involved in a conspiracy and intentionally mislead others about something so sacred to us.
Beyoncé experienced miscarriages before having her daughter, Blue Ivy. In her memoir, Matriarch, Tina Knowles-Lawson wrote that Blue Ivy was a wonderful gift to the family, especially after a difficult period.
Beyoncé shared that dealing with loss ultimately brought her family closer together.
Honestly, hearing her talk about her miscarriages just wrecked me, but it made so much sense. She said she had to learn to take care of herself first, before she could even think about being a mom to anyone else. And then Blue came along, and it was like… everything changed. She described it as a whole new level of figuring out what she was meant to do with her life. It sounds so dramatic, but she said she basically had to let go of her old self and become someone new in her relationship, and that just made her even more determined to understand who she really is. I’m obsessed with how honest she is!

The rapper, who has a son named Wilde with her husband Maximillion Cooper, previously revealed she suffered a devastating miscarriage caused by an ectopic pregnancy while working on her TV show, Eve.
Oh my god, it was 2006, and I found out I was pregnant! It was so scary – I actually needed emergency surgery and had to stop filming for like, two whole weeks. Looking back, I honestly don’t know why I told everyone on set it was a burst appendix. It was a total lie! I think… I think maybe I was just lying to myself about everything, you know?
Honestly, the thought of losing my baby was terrifying, and I truly worried if just two weeks would be enough time to even begin to heal emotionally. Looking back, even that wasn’t nearly enough physical recovery time – I was rushed right back to work on set. I’d lost so much weight from the surgery, and I felt incredibly weak and fragile.
