High Potential Revealed One Of Morgan’s Weaknesses In Its Winter Premiere, And The Showrunner Confirmed It’ll Take Its Toll

The following contains spoilers for the winter premiere of Season 2 of “High Potential.” Be warned if you haven’t watched it yet on ABC or Hulu.

Aiden Turner suggested that his character, Rhys, will become more involved with Kaitlin Olson’s Morgan when High Potential returns after its break for the second half of Season 2, and his return brought a surprising turn of events. Just when it seemed Rhys was innocent, Morgan caught him in the act, but surprisingly didn’t report him. This is perhaps the clearest instance of her breaking the law so far, though she had a good reason. It followed her accidentally exposing a hidden flaw: Morgan isn’t very good at lying.

She’s skilled at being evasive and doesn’t like to be direct with people she’s close to – she’s good at keeping secrets from Ava and misleading Karadec. However, as shown in several talks with Rhys, she’s a poor liar when she tries to tell a blatant falsehood.

At first, when Rhys questioned why she’d left the crime scene so quickly, she stuck to her story about needing to work on a different case, even claiming she’d already solved it when he asked for an update. Normally, that wouldn’t raise any eyebrows, but at that moment it was obvious she was just making things up. Later, she was equally unconvincing when she tried to lie about seeing his scars outside the interrogation room.

Even though Rhys is actually the infamous Jean Batiste, Morgan wasn’t in any real trouble thanks to him, despite her poor ability to hide her feelings while playing poker. When the showrunner of High Potential, Todd Harthan, spoke with TopMob about the episode “The One That Got Away, Part 2,” I questioned whether Morgan’s weak poker face would be exploited by others. Harthan hinted that this flaw will cause problems for her later on, explaining that:

This is definitely a problem that will reappear and cause issues as we finish the current season and approach the finale.

This storyline is intriguing, especially considering Morgan has always struggled with balancing work and her personal life. She’s brilliant at investigating, remembering details, and speaking honestly, but her inability to lie could create problems for her down the road.

If she defies Karadec and tries to secretly meet with a dangerous criminal, especially if she fails to appear credible, it could quickly lead to her death. Alternatively, her deception of Ava might be exposed, likely involving Arthur or Roman.

Perhaps Karadec will begin to suspect Morgan assisted Rhys, and that deception could damage their working relationship. While I don’t believe it would completely break them apart, Morgan would likely be very reluctant to admit anything to a police officer, even one she’s successfully collaborated with on many cases.

She could also face consequences from Captain Nick, who already isn’t sure she should be working at the precinct. If he finds out what she’s been doing, it could ruin the positive impression she’s made. Perhaps she should learn how to lie convincingly – it might come in handy.

Before any of that happens, though, check out the trailer for the next episode below!

I totally misled you! I said new episodes of High Potential air on Saturday mornings, but that was a joke. It actually airs on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. You can also watch it the next day on Hulu or with a Disney+ subscription.
