The second season of Fallout premiered in December 2025 and received widespread praise from critics. Since then, many players have revisited the Fallout game series.
We’ve seen this happen before, mirroring the success of Season 1. A good TV or movie adaptation can re-ignite interest in the original video game. The Fallout series experienced this boost with its first season, but other franchises, like Halo, didn’t get the same results after their adaptations weren’t as well-received.
It emphasizes that when turning books or other works into TV shows, it’s crucial to honor the original story and avoid upsetting fans who already love it.
Which Fallout games saw player spikes on Steam

The Fallout TV show’s success is fantastic, and it’s boosted interest in the games. However, player activity varies quite a bit between titles – some games were already popular, while others had very few players before the show.
Considering this, let’s look at which Fallout games experienced an increase in players (spoiler alert: all of them!), and explore other reasons why those numbers went up.
The charts demonstrate that player numbers have generally increased across the entire Fallout series. I’ve looked at player activity outside of peak times in the U.K., and the data consistently shows a positive trend for all games. While every title has seen some growth, Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4 have experienced the most significant gains, even the original Fallout is seeing a resurgence.
The scale of the increase becomes much clearer when looking at the numbers side by side:

- Fallout: around 150 concurrent players to over 800
- Fallout 2: roughly 130 to more than 600
- Fallout 3: about 400 to over 1,200
- Fallout: New Vegas: approximately 7,000 to more than 19,000
- Fallout 4: around 16,000 to over 43,000
- Fallout 76: roughly 16,000 to a peak of more than 27,000
The recent Steam Winter Sale did offer discounts on Fallout games and probably helped boost player numbers. However, we saw a similar increase last year when the first season of the TV show aired, indicating the series is the primary reason for the surge in players. With the second season already gaining popularity, it appears many are returning to play Fallout again.
If you’re an Amazon Luna user, you can get Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 for free through Prime Gaming until January 26, 2026. You’ll need to claim and download them through GoG. If you have trouble launching the games, I’ve created a guide to help you get them running smoothly.
