In 2026, the idea of console-exclusive games is becoming more complex, especially as Microsoft explores releasing its top games on more platforms. Exclusivity can be risky because it limits the number of potential players. It appears one high-profile game originally intended for PlayStation 5 has suffered because of this.
PlayStation Lifestyle reports that a PlayStation 5 game, previously planned for release in 2025, has been canceled. While some fans hoped it was just postponed, it now appears the game won’t be coming out at all.
A PlayStation 5 Console Exclusive Has Been Cancelled, Apparently
You Hate To See It
During PlayStation’s State of Play presentation in May 2024, Sony announced Ballad of Antara, a visually intriguing action role-playing game. The game was originally planned to launch in 2025, but it appears development has been cancelled.
A concept artist working on the game, using the online name “yuehai2000,” announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the project had been canceled after a fan inquired about their artwork. When asked what the art was for, the artist revealed it was for a game called “Ballad of Antara” that was no longer in development. While the artist deleted their account, other evidence suggests the game has indeed been canceled.
According to a post by industry insider Lunatic Ignus, the game Ballad of Antara is likely to be canceled. Reports from Chinese sources, Jinghe and Game Grape, indicated that Paper Games, the company behind the game, underwent a significant restructuring in January 2025. This restructuring dramatically reduced the development team from 120 people to just 20.
The game reportedly only had one playable chapter available for testing between 2021 and 2024, which caused internal issues during company cutbacks. With so many action RPGs becoming popular lately, it had attracted a lot of attention, including from us here at Screen Rant. Sony also seemed confident in the game, as they showcased it during a State of Play presentation.
Ballad Of Antara Is MIA
Its Fate Isn’t Official Yet
It’s looking likely that Ballad of Antara will be cancelled, though there hasn’t been an official announcement yet. We’ve seen similar things happen with other games, and it’s probably not the last time. The game industry is facing a lot of difficulties right now, and a complex project like this requires a lot of work to perfect.
It’s likely this game was originally planned during the peak of the recent popularity of games like Souls and Elden Ring. However, with so many similar games already available, the developers probably had to make several changes. Ultimately, it looks like the PlayStation 5 will have one less game that’s only available on that system.
