In two weeks, Netflix will premiere “Finding Her Edge,” a new sports romance that fans are hoping will make up for the cancellation of a previous show back in 2020.
Romance is having a moment on TV, with lots of fresh and interesting shows being released. Sports romances, which have been popular in books for some time, are now especially gaining traction on screen.
This isn’t the first attempt at a show like this. A great sports romance called Spinning Out came out in 2020, but unfortunately, Netflix canceled it after only one season. Thankfully, a new show coming in January 2026 should fill the void.
Netflix Prematurely Cancelled Spinning Out In 2020
I still remember discovering Spinning Out when it dropped on January 1, 2020 – it really grabbed me! This young adult drama centers around Kat Baker, a promising figure skater whose hopes for the Olympics are seriously threatened by an accident. Luckily, she gets another shot at her dreams when she’s paired with Justin, a seriously talented but undeniably mischievous skater. Their partnership is just… electric!
The show tackled difficult themes, including the protagonist confronting her past, overcoming her fear after an injury, and navigating a strained relationship. It also offered a thoughtful look at mental health. Plus, the first season hinted at a compelling romance blossoming between the two main characters, starting as rivals. Overall, it was a really strong show with a lot going for it.
Even though viewers loved it, Netflix canceled the show after only one season, saying not enough people were watching. Since then, we haven’t seen a really good romantic story centered around figure skating. But a new show coming soon might fill that void.
Netflix’s Adaptation Of Finding Her Edge Will Explore Themes Of Family Legacy & Love

Netflix is adapting Jennifer Iacopelli’s novel, Finding Her Edge, into a series. The story centers on Adriana Russo, a talented figure skater, who gets caught in a complicated love life. She’s torn between her feelings for her new skating partner, Brayden, and her old partner—and first love—Freddie. To complicate things further, Adriana agrees to pretend to date Brayden for publicity.
On top of everything else, she also faces the stress of supporting her family and upholding their reputation, which takes a toll on her emotional well-being. While the new story won’t focus on mental health as intensely as previous ones, it will still explore similar issues. And, as a bonus, it will feature a romantic storyline between skating partners.
Why Finding Her Edge Could Succeed Where Spinning Out Failed

I remember when Spinning Out first came out – sports romances weren’t the big thing on screen they are now. But Finding Her Edge has a real advantage. Heated Rivalry totally changed the game and now everyone wants to see a good sports romance. Plus, since both shows center around skating, I think Finding Her Edge could really connect with viewers – it feels like the perfect time for it.
Additionally, Finding Her Edge is expected to be less intense and potentially upsetting for viewers than Spinning Out. The scenes in Spinning Out involving Kat’s mother were difficult for some to watch. While Finding Her Edge will deal with Adriana’s emotional well-being, it probably won’t feature the highly stressful, emotionally charged mother-daughter interactions that were present in Spinning Out.
