There’s been a lot of speculation about a surprise fourth game announcement at the Xbox Developer_Direct, and many people, including myself, thought it might be Ninja Theory’s Project: Mara. Recent reports described a new, smaller-scale game from one of Xbox’s internal studios, and Project: Mara seemed to fit that description. However, according to Jez Corden from Windows Central, that doesn’t appear to be true – Project: Mara is reportedly not currently in development.
On the Xbox Two Podcast with Rand al Thor 19, Corden reported that Project: Mara, announced in 2020, is currently just an idea and not a game Ninja Theory is actively developing. While they might revisit the project in the future, it’s not currently in production.
It looks like a third Hellblade game is in the works! According to reports, it will be more gameplay-focused and engaging than the first two games, aiming to reach a wider audience. Ninja Theory reportedly approved the project in May 2024, shortly after releasing Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2.
The game Project: Mara was planned as a unique horror experience focused on innovative storytelling. It would have starred Melina Juergens, known for her role as Senua in the Hellblade games, and aimed to realistically portray the horrors of mental distress.
Although Ninja Theory hasn’t officially announced what’s happening with Project: Mara, they haven’t shared many updates since it was first revealed. The last significant news came in January 2021, when they said the game’s story would take place entirely within a single apartment.
Everyone’s been buzzing about that mysterious fourth game, and thankfully, we don’t have much longer to wait to find out what it is! Xbox Developer_Direct ’26 is happening on January 22nd at 10 AM PST, and I’m so excited to see what they reveal – they’re showing off Fable, Forza Horizon 6, and Beast of Reincarnation! I’m really hoping we finally get some answers about that secret title.
