Stellan Skarsgård Jokes His 8 Kids Taught Him to Be a “Bad Father”

Stellan Skarsgård is getting sentimental—kind of.

While accepting the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor on January 11, 2026, the star of Sentimental Value paused to thank an unexpected group of people who unknowingly assisted him with his performance.

During his acceptance speech at the event hosted by Nikki Glaser, 74-year-old Stellan Skarsgård joked that his children have been a great learning experience. He explained he’s playing a flawed father in a project, and his own children have helped him understand what makes a father ‘bad’.

Stellan Skarsgård has eight children: Alexander, 49, Gustaf, 45, Sam, 43, Bill, 35, Eija, 33, and Valter, 30, with his former wife, My Skarsgård, and Ossian, 16, and Kolbjörn, 13, with his current wife, Megan Everett. He also publicly thanked Megan for her support in preparing for his role in a film by Joachim Trier.

He expressed gratitude for his wife, Megan Everett Skarsgård, describing her as a remarkably supportive, challenging, and insightful partner.

Stellan hasn’t been the only one discussing how his personal experiences influenced his performance in Sentimental Value. Alexander also jokingly mentioned it back in December.

During a conversation with his father for Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors, the True Blood star called the film Sentimental Value “beautiful.” He then jokingly asked his father if he was playing a version of himself – specifically, an absent father – in the movie.

He explained that he started spreading negative rumors about his father after Stellan pretended to be upset by what he considered an offensive remark.

This wouldn’t be the first time Stellan Skarsgård has charmed audiences with his humor at the Golden Globes. Back in 2020, while accepting his award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series for Chernobyl, he playfully complimented Colin Farrell’s eyebrows and thanked the show’s makeup artists for giving his own face a little boost.

During the January 2020 ceremony, the Mamma Mia! actor shared a funny story about something Milos Forman told him a couple of years prior: ‘Stellan, I’ve seen you in so many films, but I never remember your face!’ He realized this was because he doesn’t have eyebrows, making it hard for people to read his expressions. Unlike Colin Farrell, whose anger is obvious, he needed help for this particular film. Luckily, Daniel Parker created a pair of eyebrows for him!
