These days, it’s pretty typical for movie studios to revive popular franchises with new films. But it was still surprising news when Peter Jackson announced two new Lord of the Rings movies. The first, The Hunt for Gollum, will be directed by and star Andy Serkis, and he won’t be the only original cast member making a return.
During a public event last year, Sir Ian McKellen hinted that Gandalf and Frodo would both be in the upcoming movie. Elijah Wood was present and appeared to react with a smile, but remained silent. When recently asked about the possibility of returning at Fan Expo New Orleans, Wood responded (according to ScreenRant)…
I can’t say anything for sure about that. But trust me, a good storyteller knows what they’re doing. Officially, I’m not permitted to confirm anything. However, I’m thrilled about the new movie! It feels like the original creative team is reuniting – a lot of the key people from the first films are involved. Philippa Boyens is co-writing and producing, and it’s really that core group coming back together to tell a story that will be a really enjoyable look at a character we all adore.
Elijah Wood seems to be hinting at a return, and appears to be enjoying the speculation, but he’s carefully avoiding a direct confirmation. He says he’ll be back ‘if a wizard is to be trusted,’ likely because of contractual obligations preventing him from officially announcing his involvement at this time.

Wood shared his enthusiasm about Andy Serkis directing The Hunt for Gollum. He believes it’s fitting that Serkis, who originally brought the character to life on screen, will now lead a film centered around Gollum. Wood is also excited about the future of The Lord of the Rings and any new stories they tell.
I’m really happy Andy is directing! It just feels perfect, considering how much he’s embodied the character. I’m genuinely thrilled about it, and I think it’s going to be fantastic. Plus, I’m excited to hear they’re planning more films in this world – it’ll be interesting to see where they take the story, and it’s all very promising.
When The Hunt for Gollum was announced, the plan was for two Lord of the Rings films. It’s currently unknown whether these movies will be part of a connected story or independent films. However, it’s looking likely that Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings universe will continue, and while it hasn’t been confirmed, the original cast members will probably have opportunities to return to Middle-earth if they’re interested.
