The live-action God of War series has cast its Kratos, and the actor chosen is familiar to players of the video games – a surprising but welcome choice for many fans.
Even though the God of War video game series has a twenty-year history, the upcoming Prime Video TV show will start with the newer storyline set in Norse mythology.
Development on this project started in 2022, and the script began taking shape in early 2024. However, we’ve kept the actor playing the main character a secret until today.
Okay, so this is pretty cool – for the upcoming TV show based on the God of War games, they’ve cast Ryan Hurst as Kratos! You might recognize him because he was Thor in God of War: Ragnarök, which is awesome casting considering the show is all about the Norse mythology stuff from those games.

While Ragnarök marked Hurst’s debut in video game acting and earned him a BAFTA nomination, he’d already built a successful career in film and television beforehand.
After gaining recognition for his part in the 2000 film Remember the Titans, Hurst has continued to appear in popular television shows like Sons of Anarchy (as Opie Winston), Outsiders (as Li’l Foster Farrell), and The Walking Dead (as Beta), among other roles.
Of course, with Hurst’s confirmation as Kratos, another major question arises.
Now that the game is based on the last two installments, who is cast as Atreus, Kratos’s son?

I’m a huge fan of the God of War games, and what really gets me is the story of Kratos and his son, Atreus. It’s all about their journey together – they’re spreading the ashes of Atreus’s mother, Faye, and it’s such a powerful, emotional trip. Both the first game and Ragnarök really focus on that father-son bond as they travel.
The story largely unfolds through how the characters interact and grow, with both of them evolving as both divine beings and as people.
In 2024, renowned writer and producer Ronald D. Moore—known for his work on shows like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Outlander—took charge of the series, becoming its writer, showrunner, and executive producer after the previous executive producers left.
I’m so excited to hear that Frederick E.O. Toye, who’s directed stuff I love like Shōgun and The Boys, is going to direct the first two episodes! That’s a fantastic start to the series.
Sources say that Sony Santa Monica is currently working on the next installment in the God of War game franchise.
