For decades, Shueisha’s Shonen Jump has been home to some of the most popular manga series ever created. Titles like Dragon Ball, One Piece, My Hero Academia, and Jujutsu Kaisen all began in Weekly Shonen Jump. However, not every series becomes a hit, and Shonen Jump doesn’t hesitate to cancel those that don’t connect with readers. They’ve recently done so again, starting the new year with a cancellation.
Last year, mangaka Yuki Kawaguchi launched Otr of The Flame, a story set in a Viking world facing a demonic threat. The main character, Otr, dreams of being a cook, but may be the only one who can save humanity. Though the setting shares similarities with Vinland Saga, the artwork is more reminiscent of My Hero Academia. The series recently concluded in Japan with its thirty-fourth chapter, and Shonen Jump hasn’t explained why it ended. Fortunately, Kawaguchi was able to provide a conclusive ending for Otr, though fans are questioning whether it fully resolved the story.
Shonen Jump’s Cancellation Problem

I’ve noticed it’s tough for new manga series in Shonen Jump to really find their audience. There’s so much competition from already popular titles like Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, Dandadan, One Piece, and Sakamoto Days that it’s hard for anything new to break through. But it’s not impossible! Kagurabachi, which started in 2023, is a great example – it’s become really popular even without an anime adaptation yet, which is impressive.
Just because a manga series ends doesn’t mean it won’t become an anime. A great example is Super Psychic Policeman Chojo, which ran for only a year starting in 2024, but still is getting an anime thanks to Arvo Animation, despite having just eight volumes. While an anime for Otr of the Flame hasn’t been announced yet, many fans are hoping to see the Viking story animated. Hopefully, more Weekly Shonen Jump manga will have the chance to build a dedicated fanbase in the future.
